The annual Los Angeles Anime Expo is where comic books, imaginary characters and digital screen sirens come to life. As a first-timer attendee of the biggest cosplay convention in the country, I was thankful to be in the good company of expo veterans Diane Jong and Essy Noir of Noir Fairy. Never have I seen so many wildly (and impressively) outlandish outfits in one place – the experience was like Halloween on steroids. Though a bit out there – or even ahead of its time for some – the expo was still an eye-opening experience, a lesson in the reaches of fashion. After all, are not some of the most forward-thinking and innovative styles borrowed from the most unconventional environments and risk-taking subcultures?
