Great people are those who 'create' something good which then 'inspires' other people. We should try to form part of the first group.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you live.
I'm a 20 years old Law & Economics student. I was born in Oviedo, in the north of Spain, but currently I live in Madrid.
What are your passions?
Skyscrapers, the cinema of the 90's, apple cakes, traveling, black comedy, scolding my mother when she's smoking.
How did you first get interested in fashion?
Actually I'm not "interested" in fashion, but I think I started to think in fashion when I was 11 and I had no choice because my mother stopped choosing my clothes for me. That's when I realized that you can express a lot of things with the clothes you wear… I think when we look at someone we don't know, more or less, 70% of our impression is given by his look, 20% by his face and 10% by his hairstyle…
How do you describe the fashion scene in Madrid compared to other places?
Well, Spaniards have never been famous for our "fashion taste." Yes, we discovered America, we conquered almost the whole world but we didn't know a fuck about how to dress ourselves. But I think Madrid, since the 80's, has taken a new direction. After 40 years of dictatorship, people found out what "freedom" actually meant, and started to express themselves through arts, movies, music and somehow fashion, and maybe that sense of freedom still rests in peoples' minds. I think people here do not care for fashion as much as the other major cities, but I think that's what makes us the I'm-wearing-the-first-pants-found-in-my-closet-and-I'm-still-cool people.
What do you love about living in Madrid?
Its buildings, its weather, and overall, its people. Here you can do anything you want to, maybe people who have always lived here don't notice it, but when you come from a little town you give it a lot of value. Once you put your feet on the ground, you're from here. Nobody cares where you come from, what is your language, your surname…you're here so you are one of us.
What are your top 3 places to visit in Spain?
1. Oviedo, where I was born. Woody Allen visited it and said "Oviedo is delicious, exotic, beautiful, clean, pleasant, peaceful, and kind to pedestrians. It's as if it doesn't belong to this world, as if it could not possibly exist…Oviedo is like a fairy tale."Nothing more to say.
2. Madrid. Madrid has got a lot of different clubs. You can hang out with your friends everyday and never get bored.
3. San Sebastián. San Sebastián is a beautiful city (almost as beautiful as Oviedo) to go with your partner and have a delicious dinner at one of their amazing restaurants and go for a midnight walk at the beach.
Describe your personal style and its influences / inspiration.
I do not like to name everything, let alone something as abstract as personal style. I wear what I want because I like it. Sounds childish but it's the way it is. I do not think I have any influence nor inspiration, or at least I try not to have it. Great people are those who 'create' something good which then 'inspires' other people. We should try to form part of the first group.
Fair enough. Can you tell us about how you choose what to wear every day?
I don't know…I like all the clothes I buy, so I wear the first jeans-tee-jumper I find. Sometimes I leave home and when I at look myself in the lift mirror, I look like a clown and it seems I dressed myself with the light off so I have to run to my room again and change my clothes. It's really funny, if many of my [LB] fans saw me sometimes, they would totally reconsider it.
Favorite designers and places to shop?
My favourite brands are A.P.C., Acne, Paul Smith Jeans, Velour, Comme des Garçons and Dries Van Noten. If you're thinking of visiting Madrid, you should go shopping at Sportivo and Mini, the best places to buy menswear clothes in this city by far.
The first thing you look at in another person's outfit is:
The brightest piece of clothing.
What do you skimp on?
I wish I had all the money in the world to not have to skimp on anything…In general, if I'm dying for something which is very expensive, which isn't very common, I try to save for a long time and then get it and die poor but happy.
What do you splurge on?
If I say how much I paid for my last Comme des Garçons jumper my mum would die poor and unhappy.
A fashion rule you always break:
On Mondays I try to put my head in a shoe.
A fashion rule you never break:
I think last answer shows what I think of fashion rules. Why are there rules everywhere? As if we hadn't enough!
What do you think is the most recent notable trend to appear/reappear, and what are your thoughts on it?
Rolled up pants? I wished they were trendy because I wear them everyday…
What is the most underrated item in menswear and womenswear?
I think tank tops are the most underrated and overrated at the same time (if that's even possible) item ever.
What is your next "must have" purchase?
One of those tiny Prada jumpers from the latest season. (When I hear myself saying things like this I feel stupid.)
Are there any fashion icons or famous people whose style you admire?
I like fashion icons who don't know they actually are. People who know it and live for it usually become a fake and absurd version of themselves.
What's on your iPod / bookshelf / DVD player at the moment?
iPod: Noah and the Wale, Calexico, Edith Piaf, Tracey Ullman, The XX and Neil Diamond.
Bookshelf: I finally got an e-book! Maybe you won't believe me, but I'm reading Madame Bovary (and it's taking long).
DVD player: The Three Colours Trilogy (Blue, Red and White) and Shortbus.
What can't you live without?
Next place you want to travel to:
Berlin. Actually I'll spend this July there because I want to improve my German and, with a bit of luck, dance techno with Angela Merkel.
What is your personal favorite outfit on LOOKBOOK by you, and by another member?
Your mom and sister seem like wonderful ladies!
I think they have the same mental age! Actually I have two sisters and one brother and I love them in the same way, they make me laugh, cry, smile, have fun, come back to my childhood…
In the year 2015 you will be:
Hopefully, a very happy curly haired guy.
What would you say to someone seeking general fashion advice?
To just read what fashion magazines say and do the contrary.
Our last interviewee Zoe wants to know: if there was a zombie apocalypse, what would be your first weapon of choice?
What should we ask the next interviewee?
If God exists and one day decides to join LOOKBOOK, how would he/she name the first look?
