Beyond the hype // Edward Honaker

JANUARY 2012

If you don't have cool hair, I don't think we can be friends.

Edward Honaker is an 18 year old photography student and blogger of Edward's Hair from San Diego, California.

Ehonaker1

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Edward Honaker. I'm 18 years old, and I live in San Diego, California. Right now I'm studying photography at a local college, but I'm considering attending medical school in the future. I'm a Christian, and I attend church regularly. My father is American, but my mother is from Mexico, so I speak Spanglish fairly well. I have an older brother, and two very lovely sisters who are kind enough to take my pictures. I work as a waiter at a sushi restaurant. It's a stressful, busy job, but it's also a lot of fun. The free food is definitely a huge plus. In my free time, I enjoy taking pictures, listening to and playing music, hanging out with my family, and making weird faces. I also post pictures and other fun stuff at edwardshair.net.

How did you first get interested in fashion and why is it important?

I really had no interest in fashion at all until I was about fifteen years old. I had a uniform of a loose plaid shirts, baggy cargo shorts, and skate shoes. It's just what I always wore, and I never really thought much about it. I even used to be proud of wearing socks with sandals. Things changed one day when I was laying on the couch, watching TV, when a Jonas Brothers special came on. I saw all the people going crazy over them, and I thought to myself, "What do they have that I don't have? Besides money, talent, looks, etc." They had cool clothes! Now obviously, I don't agree with much of their sartorial decisions, but it was enough to spark an interest. After that, I started putting effort into the way I dressed. It was all pretty foreign to me, but I found that I really enjoyed putting outfits together. I started taking photos of what I was wearing, and things just kind of snowballed. As Paul Harvey would say, now you know the rest of the story.

Fashion is important because it's how you present yourself to the world. By dressing well you can put your best foot forward, and you can express your personality non verbally. Fashion is a lot of fun, but it's also important to remember that it's a luxury. We could easily survive on the most basic of basics.

Ehonaker2

What are your passions?

I really enjoy fashion. I love putting outfits together, and playing around with different colors and textures, and getting the fit exactly right. I also love photography. Few things are quite as satisfying as taking a good photograph. More specifically, I really like fashion photography and portraiture. I'm not too good at it now, but I hope to get better. Oh yeah, and I really, really love sleeping. You know that feeling you get after a long day at work when you crawl into bed and put your head down on the pillow? Best feeling ever.

How do you describe the fashion scene in San Diego compared to other major cities/fashion capitals?

Haha, I'd dare say that for the most part, San Diego isn't too fashion conscious. There are some really dressed people, but I don't see them very often. Maybe I'm just not hanging around the right places.

What do you love about living in San Diego?

The weather is pretty great. It stays comfortable year round. It's never too hot, and it never gets too cold. San Diego also has the best Mexican food north of the border. I'd weigh about fifteen pounds less if it weren't for those California burritos. So good.

Top 3 places to visit in the United States:

1. Disneyland. I mean, come on, it's the happiest place on earth.

2. Any of the many beach towns on the west coast. If you've never been to one, I can't really explain it. The weather is perfect, the ocean is beautiful, the air smells so good, and the distant sound of the waves is really peaceful. They're just fun places to hang out.

3. I really love the deserts around San Diego County. There's literally nothing out there besides rocks and cacti, but it's absolutely silent, and surprisingly beautiful. At night, the stars are bright enough to illuminate the desert floor, eliminating the need for a flashlight. It's pretty surreal. I wouldn't want to live out there, but it's a fun place to visit for a few days.

Ehonaker3

Describe your personal style and its influences/inspiration.

I'm not really sure! I generally just keep things pretty simple. I really try to focus on nailing the fit and the small details of the clothing, rather than constantly switching between different, outrageous styles. I've certainly come a long way in terms of how I dress, but there's still a ton of room for improvement.

I don't look to any particular people or places for inspiration, but just pretty much whatever comes along. However, one thing I find incredibly inspiring is when I see people wearing a fairly basic item (t-shirt, or a leather jacket, or really good jeans, or sneakers, or just whatever) that really compliments and enhances their persona, almost as if that piece of clothing were a part of their personality. I love that.

Favorite designers and places to shop?

I very much enjoy the stylings of Jean Touitou, Tom Ford, David Lim, Christopher Bailey, Johan Lindeberg, and Brunello Cucinelli. I actually buy most of my clothes either online or at local discount stores.

The first thing you look at in another person's outfit is:

Their hair. If you don't have cool hair, I don't think we can be friends.

What do you skimp on?

Variety? I really don't own very much clothing. I wear the same things every day, haha.

What do you splurge on?

Pretty much everything. While I don't own a whole lot of clothes, I like to buy the best I can, which works out since I stick to pretty basic stuff anyway, so it's all pretty versatile. When it comes to fashion, a lot of people have the mindset that more equals better, and they focus on buying as much clothes as they can. I really don't like that. Why not use the money you'd spend toward three or four average shirts and buy one really nice shirt instead? I mean, if I wear a basic blue shirt four or five days out of the week, I might as well invest in a really well made, well fitting, and comfortable shirt. It's an investment, and it'll last longer and look better. Buy less, but buy better.

Ehonaker4

A fashion rule you always break:

Sometimes I wear sunglasses when it's not sunny out, just so I can catch a quick incognito nap.

A fashion rule you never break:

I never mix brown and black leather (like a brown belt with black shoes). It's just not right.

What do you think is the most recent notable trend to appear/reappear, and what are your thoughts on it?

Camo print has really made a resurgence in menswear the past year or so. I can't say I'm a big fan, but I can't deny that it'd be helpful when trying to blend with the shrubbery. Perfect for those days when see someone you know but don't want to say hi.

What is the most underrated item in menswear and womenswear?

Belts and socks! There are a ton of interesting options out there, but most people (and by that I really mean myself) just stick to the very basics.

Your favorite colour(s) of the moment are:

Brown and blue. They're more or less my default colors, and I find them very easy on the eyes.

What is your next "must have" purchase?

I've been eyeing a pair of dark brown Alden longwings. They're such a beautiful shoe, and would go with pretty everything in my wardrobe. Unfortunately, my wallet's been pretty thin recently, so it'll have to wait a while!

What is the ultimate showpiece in your closet?

I have a fantastic navy wool coat, with handsome wood buttons. I don't get to wear it very often, because it rarely gets cold here, but it's a pretty marvelous coat. I feel like a superhero when I wear it, haha.

Are there any fashion icons or famous people whose style you admire?

As far as celebrities go, I really like the way Zac Efron dresses. He keeps things pretty simple, but still manages to look amazing.

Ehonaker5

What's on your iPod / bookshelf / DVD player at the moment?

Of recent I've really been into new-disco/synth-pop artists, like Anoraak, Tesla Boy, College, Futurecop, and pretty much everything from the Valerie Collective. I've also been listening to some older hip-hop, like Queen Latifah, EPMD, and Naughty by Nature. I also really like Cut Copy, Justice, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Boards of Canada, and a bunch others. Far too many to name!

I love reading biographies. Right now I'm reading the biographies of a group of American submariners during World War II. I've also been flipping through some photography books by William Eggleston. Fun stuff.

High School Musical is always on my DVD player. I love those movies.

What can't you live without?

Cheeze-Its. Those are pretty much 50% of my diet.

What is your personal favorite outfit on LOOKBOOK by you, and by another member?

My favorite look of myself would have to be this one. Even though I look kind of angry (it's just the way my face is!), I just really like the outfit.

My favorite look from another member would have to be this one, by Guiliano Joshua. Everything fits so well, and it's such a nice color combination. Even the picture itself is beautiful.

Next place you want to travel to (and why):

I would love to visit Disney World, in Florida. It looks pretty marvelous!

Ehonaker6

In the year 2016 you will be:

Hopefully I'll have an awesome handlebar mustache. It's kind of my dream.

What would you say to someone seeking fashion advice?

Wear your clothes, don't let your clothes wear you. If you feel out of place in your outfit, then you will look out of place. Work it! *finger snap*

Flávia Linden wants to know: They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. If you had to choose one picture that best represents you what would it be and why?

This is one of my favorite photographs of all time. I can really relate to the determination on the kid's face. It describes my drive in life.

What should we ask the next interviewee?

Let's say that you have a TV show about your day-to-day life. What would be the name of the show? What would be the theme song?
