Beyond the hype // Ben Galbraith

SEPTEMBER 2012

If you like suits, wear suits. If you enjoy wearing crocs and bright neon pink tights and a bowler hat…that’s okay too.

Ben Galbraith is a 23 year old set & costume designer and blogger of Kolonel Mustard from Adelaide, South Australia.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m Benjamin Galbraith, a 23 year old guy from Upside Down Land (Australia). I live in a city called Adelaide, which is in the state of South Australia. I often work as a freelance set and costume designer as well as a poor struggling artist. Currently, I am working as the creative director for a soon-to-launch just-launched online store, Merrin & Gussy. I have a pet dog called Oscar, who often appears on my Instagram feed. When I’m not working, you can pretty much always find me drawing, taking photos, making short films or…online playing various games. You would be surprised how handy a knowledge of some games can save your bacon on a day-to-day basis. Oh also, I fight dragons.

What are your biggest passions?

Art! And design would be the two things I am most passionate about. (You can view some of my work at the-estab.com.) I have always been interested in all kinds of visual art, which lead me into the field of theatre design. I love writing my blog and learning to figure out new ways to re-jig old items of clothing I own. It’s a pretty cool feeling when you realise you could wear something you’ve owned for ages in a totally different way.

How did you first get interested in fashion and why is it important?

I’ve always found menswear and fashion really fascinating. I guess I only started dressing better back when I was studying. I remember I saw some images of some mods in the 60’s and I thought to myself, “Damn that is a cool look…how can they wear suits and still be casual?” So I basically started wearing a suit every now and then at times, when honestly it probably was a bit silly to be wearing one. I just generally became more aware of dressing better, and it soon became more fun for me as the years went by. Fashion and style are important because unfortunately so many people go off first impressions these days and having a good knowledge of what style suits you best can really help you out in life. And honestly…people often don’t know how fun it is.

1

How would you describe the fashion scene in Adelaide in comparison to other major cities or fashion capitals?

I’m not going to pull punches here. The fashion scene in Adelaide is really bad. At least for guys it is. It's amazing how many well dressed women there are in Adelaide but it never translates to guys. It sounds really snobbish, I know, but men always will go for comfort and tend to shy away from anything remotely different. I’m sure there are some guys with amazing personal style, but they must never be around when I am because I’ve never met them.

What do you love about living in your city?

Despite not being the most fashionable place, Adelaide still has the most amazingly friendly people. Its pace of life can never be beaten for me. Being 15 minutes from the beach and the [city centre] as well as 30 minutes from the hills is an amazing plus too.

Top 3 places to visit in Australia:

Melbourne—the fashion capital of Australia. Adelaide—amazing food and very relaxed lifestyle. Tasmania—although I’ve never been, I’ve heard it has some of the most beautiful landscapes.

Describe your personal style, its influences and inspirations.

It’s always hard to describe how I dress since it changes so much. I love suits, as I’m sure everyone on LOOKBOOK is aware. There is a particular 60’s aesthetic I absolutely love, probably in some part inspired by my addiction to Mad Men. Lots of skinny pencil ties and 60’s colours. I like to keep things pretty simple though when it comes to suits, since you really don’t need a lot to make a suit look good. I get a lot of inspiration from American preppy styles and British mods.

Favorite designers and places to shop?

I do so much of my shopping online so I can’t really list many stores. Some of my favourites would be ASOS, Topman, Mr. Porter and Jack London, and of course you can go past eBay for those insane finds.

6

The first thing you look at in another person's outfit is:

I actually have always thought the best outfit is the one you don’t notice straight away. I always love seeing people who can show their personality so effortlessly in what they are wearing.

What do you skimp on?

Unfortunately…everything. I’m pretty cheap.

What do you splurge on?

That would be suits…I have a problem okay!

A fashion rule you always break:

I don’t know. Probably mixing different colour leathers, I’m pretty bad when it comes to that.

A fashion rule you never break:

I honestly don’t pay attention to many rules. People should just wear whatever they want.

What do you think is the most recent notable trend to appear or reappear, and what are your thoughts on it?

Velvet blazers! There were so many around this winter. I was pretty tempted by a couple I saw a while back, but I honestly thought I would end up looking like Austin Powers.

What is the most underrated item in menswear and womenswear?

I can’t really speak for womenswear, but for men I would have to say it’s the smaller things that can make an outfit shine. Belts, socks, tie bars, etc. Those types of items can really help to show your true personality in an outfit.

9

Your favourite color(s) of the moment are:

Probably for spring, I'll be wearing a lot of muted green colours. But my favourite colour for the moment is a light camel.

What is your next "must have" purchase?

I have had this amazing 3-piece khaki green wool suit on lay-by for a while, so I'll probably pay that off and wear it every day before winter is up. I was invited to lecture a class at my old school recently, so that would be the perfect (slightly silly) outfit for that.

What is the ultimate showpiece in your closet?

Probably this suit here (pictured left). Every time I wear that thing, I get some of the craziest looks. I guess it is pretty mental, ey?

Are there any fashion icons or famous people whose style you admire?

Alex Turner is probably my idol. Him and Ryan Gosling.

What's on your iPod at the moment?

Arctic Monkeys (always). The Beatles…are pretty much always playing.

What can't you live without?

My computer and Steam…I probably have way too many games on there, but it’s my way of unwinding at the end of the day. I will also put my amazing family here too…they are a pretty sweet bunch of people.

Next place you want to travel to:

I would love to visit America; New York mostly. But I would love to travel across [the States] and visit some of the more unknown places.

8

What is your personal favourite outfit on LOOKBOOK by you, and by another member?

Probably my favourite look of mine would be this one here (pictured right) since I love dressing in a typical 60’s style. My favourite men’s look is this one here by Raimundo Hernandez—in my opinion it’s pretty much perfect. As for women, this one here by MaryAlice M. is pretty amazing.

In the year 2017 you will be:

Tending to my crocodile farm on the dark side of the moon. Just imagine it: floating killer crocodiles on the moon. It would be unreal. Oh and I'll own a flying car too.

What would you say to someone seeking general fashion advice?

Just be yourself spend some time learning what suits your shape and size. Don’t try to copy anyone…instead, be inspired by them. Dress how you want and don’t care what anyone else says or tells you to wear. If you like suits, wear suits. If you enjoy wearing crocs and bright neon pink tights and a bowler hat…that’s okay too.

Camille Co wants to know: If you can create your dream country, what would it be? Like for example, the stores of Paris + the food of Japan + the beaches of California + the weather of…and so and so forth.

I would take the laid back pace of life of Adelaide and combine it with the eclectic, artistic style of Melbourne. I would then take the food of Hong Kong, and the beaches of Sydney. That would be amazing. Oh, also I'd steal Seoul’s subway system, that thing is unreal!

What should we ask the next interviewee?

If you could be a character from any video game, who would you be?

Way cool interview! I truly admire and respect your style! The suits you wear are incredibly debonair and positively perfect my good sir! You've upheld quite a high standard of fashion and definitely raised the standard of fashion as well. Evolution of fashion is a fascinating thing, how certain styles develop through the ages and seasons. It's good to see such a brilliant fashion sense on lookbook.
