A while back, we asked you to help come up with questions for the indie superband The Virgins in a special interview hosted by our friends at Letter to Jane.
We're happy to inform you that the interview has now been published, with many great questions asked by our very own community members! It's a great read—thanks to everyone who participated!

Thanks for everyone for sending in your bug reports and for your patience...hope you had a great holiday!

Ever wish you could see more detail on looks that catch your eye? Well, that's something we've heard over and over from you guys. So last week we finally decided to add a "see large resolution" link to all our (more recent) look pages. You can find it on the right hand side of the page—click it and you'll see a larger version of the look photo :)
We also added larger thumbnails to our new "list" view format on the HOT, NEW, TOP, and personal home pages, as well as LB MOBILE (http://m.lookbook.nu). Check it out for yourself!
We've made some important changes to the way our HOT page is sorted:
1. Real-time hotness: Before, the order of looks on the HOT page would only update once every 15 minutes. Now, look "hotness" is updated in real time, so the order of looks on the hot page always accurately reflects the site's most recently popular looks. In case you didn't know already, "hotness" is calculated from three factors: (1) how recently a look was posted, (2) how much hype its received, and (3) how recent the hype was received.
2. More "rising" looks on HOT: If you see newer looks with not so much hype on the HOT page, it's not a bug! We've made some adjustments so that "rising" looks have a better shot at making the HOT page. This way, they won't be so quickly buried by the many new looks always being added to the NEW page.
Please send us a note here should you have any questions, comments or feedback!

By popular requests, we have released some nifty new options for LB users to receive email updates from the people they've fanned.
If you are getting way too many emails whenever the people you care about post new looks, just go to your settings page and you can set your fan mails to be sent to "once a day," "once a week," or "never."
For now, everyone's default has been reset to "once a day" so you'll only get at most email each day with all the new looks you haven't seen. You have the option to change it to your preferred setting, including the old default which sent out a new look "right when it's posted."
Now it's a lot easier to keep track of all the new looks from people you've fanned without clogging up your inbox. We have just added a new home link at the upper right menu when you're logged in -- click on it and you'lll see a feed of all the latest looks from only the users you care about, in other words all the people you're a "fan of."
On your home page you'll also see recommendations of "People you might like" -- these are people who have been "fanned" by the people you've "fanned" so chances are you might find it worthwhile to stay on top of their posts as well.
Other things to note:
-We've added a new view to HOT, NEW, and TOP pages as well as the homepage so that you can view looks in 3 different ways: "full" view, "list" view, and "thumbs" view (which has been newly improved -- all the thumbs are more lined up to a grid now!).
-We also added a handful of Brands and Categories including bodysuits, jumpsuits, playsuits, and turtlenecks. Speak up if you think we've missed something!

it seems like more and more of you are hanging out on our forum when you're not surfing looks—so we made two small features to help you use it better:
1) bookmarks
click into any topic and you will see a star icon in the upper right hand corner. clicking it will save the topic to your "bookmarks" so you can reference it later. your bookmarks will show you how many new replies were made since you last viewed the topic, and can be found on the right hand side column of LB FORUM.
2) comment reply navigation
clicking the @NAME on a forum reply takes you up to the original comment that the reply was directed to. now when you click up to an original comment, you'll see a "↓ back to reply" link that will take you right back down to the reply you first clicked on. this way you'll never lose your place when browsing some of the very long forum discussions!

we've added a couple new categories to our beloved forum!
BEAUTY: by user request, this section is for members to discuss hair, skin, makeup, cosmetics, grooming, and anything else related to beauty!
TRASH: this section is for "junk threads," rants, and controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant, or off-topic messages with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discusssion. (e.g. complaints about what looks or who gets hyped).
because we believe in freedom of speech and not censoring controversial views, we will to allow topics posted to TRASH to go largely unmoderated. post topics and comments here at your own risk. HOWEVER: any abusive, obscene, defamatory, racist, sexist, religious, homophobic or threatening comments, or anything that may violate any applicable laws will NOT be tolerated.
as always we welcome constructive feedback and ideas, but any topics which fall into the above definition will be moved to the TRASH section. thank you for helping us keep LB a fun and safe community.

FIND FRIENDS, FB CONNECT, NON-MEMBER HYPES
we've rolled out a few updates you may care to know about!
first, when you're logged in you'll see a new "find friends" link on the top right menu. this is a tool we added that will allow you to quickly search your email address book to find out if there are people you email who are on LB but you aren't following them yet. we realized that a lot of you had no idea which of your friends are on the site already, so this is an easy way to find people to follow.
second, we rolled out Facebook Connect along with our already existing Tumblr and Twitter Connect options which you can find in the "settings" page. connecting your facebook account will allow you to automatically update your FB friends whenever you post, hype, or comment on a look.
third, we are now starting to allow connect-users who login via their FB, Twitter, or Tumblr accounts to HYPE looks as well as comment and give love to looks. however, there is a catch: connect-user hypes will only count for about 1/4 of member hypes when calculating a look's "hotness." we are doing this so that we get less member signups from people who are clearly not interested in posting looks. by allowing them to comment, love, and HYPE we believe it will give members more feedback on their posts while keeping the content on the site limited to a smaller, invite only pool of people.

This is a friendly reminder to everyone to please follow the rules, be a good LB citizen and help set an example to newcomer users by posting outfit shots that clearly show your ENTIRE body!
The most common rule that is broken on LOOKBOOK.nu is when people post looks that aren't head to toe. While we do allow photos that show 3/4 of your body—from head to knees or from neck to toes—we encourage full body photos as much as possible. The reason we make this a priority is to ensure a consistent quality throughout the entire site and to make sure that submissions are on-topic.
What do we mean by on-topic? This site was built to showcase looks that were carefully and creatively put together from all types of people. A common argument is that shots which only show one's face, upper body, or even just their legs/shoes, etc. "still show style, and after all isn't lookbook about style?" NO! LOOKBOOK.nu is about LOOKS, i.e. your full-body look of the day—from how you chose to style your hair, down to what shoes you chose to wear. Your look must show not only your entire OUTFIT, but as much of your BODY as you possibly can.
If you think we are not lenient at all, that is untrue. We let a fair amount of 3/4 looks slide but that is where we draw the line. If your look doesn't show your head to your knees or your neck to your toes, it will be deleted regardless of whether or not your look has tons of 'hype'! And by the way, we do delete looks from popular as well as newer users. So please do not accuse us of favoritism as we are moderating over a thousand looks per day.
OK, so now that we have clarified "head to toe", please take note of these other new changes:
1. You are allowed to combine multiple views of your outfit into a mosaic, but please don't go overboard. Some people have been posting mosaics of so many (6+) photos that the outfit is shrunk to a point where it is no longer clearly visible. Due to this occurrence, going forward we are only allowing at most 3 combined images per submission.
2. Sometimes we get submissions where the person is shot from a far distance and their outfit is not clearly visible. If you do not take up a significant portion of your photo, your look will be deleted on the basis that the outfit is not the focus.
Hopefully this spells out clearly what is acceptable and what isn't.
Thanks so much to everyone who "gets" why these guidelines are in place and consistently posts looks that follow all the rules!
To the rest, please make both our lives easier by avoiding borderline submissions from now on! We hate to delete looks but if we do, don't take it personal—we have to be fair to everyone.

NEW "SITE" CATEGORY IN LB FORUM
We started seeing lots of great LB-related discussion going on in our LB FORUM but felt like it was miscategorized in FASHION or GENERAL...so we've made a new category called SITE where you can air all your suggestions, requests, happinesses and unhappinesses with LOOKBOOK.nu!
We may not have time to get to every single topic or answer every single question in there but we will check back often and definitely take your opinions and concerns into consideration. And if there's ever anything important, always feel free to contact me at yuri [at] lookbook.nu :) Thanks for your support and helping to make this community what it is!

Have a tumblelog? You can now post looks, hypes, and comments directly to your Tumblr!
Just go to your settings page and click on "Manage site connections" -- there you'll be able to log into Tumblr and choose what you want to post!
As the site continues to grow and more members are added each day, we are seeing the need to take additional steps to ensure that the community stays on topic and high quality. Too many members are uploading photos that are not focused on their outfits (such as face shots, group shots, scenery shots, etc.) and these types of photos would be better suited for Facebook, not lookbook.nu. For this reason, we are making some changes to the rules, and we'd like you all to read them carefully below.
First, the "guidelines" will now be referred to as "rules." Looks that do not adhere to the rules will be deleted, and members who persist in violating them will be banned.
Second, our moderators are going to be more strict about deleting outfits that aren't head-to-toe.
Third, we are no longer allowing photos with more than one person. Any photo of any one other than yourself will be deleted.
Those are the major changes, but please take the time to review all 10 rules before you post. They can be seen in full on the post a look page as well as the FAQ.
Thanks for reading and for helping to keep LB the most vibrant and inspiring user-generated fashion community on the internet!

SHARING ACCOUNTS IS NOT ALLOWED!
guys, we've been seeing this more and more on LB, and we need you all to know that each member should have their own account for posting their own style! for some reason we are getting pairs or groups joining and posting looks by more than one person -or- including more than one person, which is against the posting guidelines.
if you want to get your posse on lookbook.nu, just invite them to join and post looks themselves! there's enough room to go around :)

after receiving feedback from quite a few of you saying that you wished the HOT page updated more frequently, we have decided to run some experimental tweaks with the algorithm that calculates "hotness."
now, newer looks can rise up the hot page slightly faster than before. the idea is to keep the HOT page showing the freshest looks of the day and sometimes a couple spectacular looks from the day before, but you won't be looking at the same look for over 2 days straight.
what do you guys think?
another change we're currently contemplating is adding a filter on the HOT page that lets you hide looks you've already clicked into and seen. for those of you who frequent the site often, we think it might help you find new stuff easier!

LB NAMED 'TOP TRAFFIC YIELDING SITE FOR FASHION BLOGS'
Just this past week we started to display members' site urls on all their look pages. If you look in the ABOUT THIS LOOK section of any look, you'll be able to see all the website urls that the author has listed on his or her profile. We did this in hopes of growing the sense of community on LB by giving everyone's online identities on other sites more visibility.
Less than a week after this simple change, our friend Jennine of The Coveted fame and founder of the Independent Fashion Bloggers network has named lookbook.nu as one the Top 5 Traffic Yielding Social Networks for Fashion Blogs, stating that "lately, Lookbook.nu has been yielding more traffic through the ‘looks’ and also from the forums of all places. I’ve heard from other bloggers that Lookbook.nu is great in returning traffic to your blog, so I continue to use it."
We are always glad to hear that LB is much more than just a WAYWT image board—and we're always more than happy to drive traffic to the blogs and portfolio sites our countless talented members.

POST YOUR LOOKS & COMMENTS TO TWITTER
We're now fully integrated with the new rage that everyone swears is better than Facebook -- Twitter! If you're on it already, this will be great news for you. If not, how about getting with the times? (And following @lookbookdotnu while you're at it!)
Now, whenever you post a look or comment on lookbook.nu, you will see a check box that gives you the ability to tweet it out on Twitter at the very same time! If you're posting a look, it will read, "WIWT:" (short for "What I Wore Today"), followed by your list of tagged items, followed by a link to your look's url. If you're posting a comment, it will include the body of your comment and a link to the page you commented on.
You'll need to authorize LB to connect and post to Twitter on your behalf, but don't worry -- it's completely secure (we don't store your login or pw) and only requires two clicks!
Since our launch a year ago, we've kept the site invite only and this has helped us immensely in maintaining the quality of photos and people in our community. While we intend to remain invite only -- we are now allowing non-members who have a Twitter account to log in and comment on looks, the change log, and Beyond the Hype interviews. Non-members will NOT be able to post/hype looks, comment on user profiles, send private messages, or participate in the LB FORUM. You will still have control over all the comments posted on your look and we will always be actively moderating flagged comments that are inappropriate, offensive, or spammy. We believe opening up the site in this limited way will give you more constructive feedback on your looks, while keeping LB a smaller and more closely knit community than it'd be if anyone could join.

UPDATE: wow, looks like a lot of you have already linked your twitter accounts! see all the tweets going out from lookbook.nu here: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=lookbook.nu

just wanted to say thanks to all the members—you know who you are—who actively flag and let us know about violations of our guidelines. we moderate the gallery closely every day but with the hundreds of looks added per day it's easy to miss a few looks here and there.
we do NOT tolerate impersonators nor members who repeatedly disregard the rules by posting partial outfits or outfits that've already been posted.
thanks for helping us maintain the quality and purpose of the site! it really makes a difference.

thanks to everyone who joined me tonight and Danielle at Etsy who gave me this wonderful opportunity! it was amazing to meet everyone.
here's the invite code i promised: SHOPLIVE (it will expire at midnight!)
---
i'm a relatively private person. as LOOKBOOK.nu has grown over the months, i've made it a point to keep a low profile and not make too much fuss about being one of the founders...but last week, Danielle who works over at Etsy invited me to be a guest host for their next Shop Live feature! there's no way i could turn down such an honor from one of my all time favorite websites.
if there are any fellow etsy fans out there, i would love for you to join me! basically, i'm just going to get in front of my webcam and talk about some of my favorite picks from all over their site, while you get to respond and say hi via live chat! i'll also give special mention to some of my favorite lookbook.nu users who sell on etsy. more details below!

after collecting lots of feedback from you guys, we have just made a bunch of changes to LB FORUM:
- we re-designed the forum homepage to show multiple lists of topics separated into their respective categories, rather than lumping all topics into one list.
- we removed the hype / karma / hotness paradigm in favor of a simpler display of topics sorted by latest posts. part of the reason we did this was so that old topics could still be revived by new contributions.
- each comment includes the author's thumbnail and location so you know a little more about who's saying what.
these changes designed to improve readability of comments and encourage conversations that are more personal, meaningful, and easier to follow. hope you enjoy the new forum, and let us know how we can further improve!
additional changes:
- each new member now only gets one invitation to send. as users gain karma, they will be given additional invitations to send out.
- we added a navigation bar up at the top to allow for easy browsing between LOOKBOOK.nu and all the other subsections of the site. your personal account links are still located in the upper righthand menu.
that's all for now :O)

happy new year of the ox to all our lunar-oriented lookbookers!
we've been keeping busy re-architecting the site so that it can properly support our current level of traffic. please bear with us while we attempt to make the site stabler and faster for everyone, as well as deal with any bugs that may come up in the process.
in the meantime, i wanted to give you all a sneak peak at an incomplete laundry list of member suggestions that we're either already working on or seriously considering for the future. which sound like good ideas, which are completely unnecessary? your feedback is welcome.
Homepages — a facebook style news feed of activity from people and collections you currently follow
"Nudge" feature — so you can "nudge" people you like to post a look when they haven't posted in a while (would that be too annoying?)
Neighbors — introduce members to other members who have similar taste, based on hyping activity (sort of like last.fm)
Limiting invites to 5 per person — to control the growth of the community and ensure quality users & content
LB MARKETPLACE — a simple craigslist-like listing place for buying/selling/trading clothing items and accessories
Improved LB FORUM — we've received multiple requests to improve the readability and usability of our forum. care to add specific suggestions, anyone?
Secret goodies for reaching certain karma milestones — can't say, or else they wouldn't be secret!

no updates today...just wanted to wish everyone a happy and crazy (but safe) new years eve celebration! it's about 5 and a half hours away from 2009 for us here in SF, but for some of you it's probably already 2009!
2008 was a phenomenal year for us, and we just wanted to say thanks to all the members who have participated and contributed to the LOOKBOOK.nu project. you have helped to create the world's largest, most diverse, and most inspiring gallery of user generated fashion from all over the globe.
thank you for being an active part of this community, for supporting us and telling others about LOOKBOOK, for being patient with us when we had bugs and server issues, and for expressing your love AND your criticism honestly and openly.
the LB community is still relatively small as far as most websites go, but our worldwide viewership and traffic continues to grow at an astonishing rate. we have some cool additions planned for LOOKBOOK.nu in 2009 so stay tuned everyone!
if you want to, feel free to give us your 2 cents by answering these 3 questions for our year-end consideration:
1. what do you like best about LB?
2. what do you like least?
3. what is the one thing you would change or add?
---
EDIT: thanks everyone for your feedback! we read and take all your comments to heart even if we don't reply to each one individually.

look in the upper right hand corner of all look pages and you'll see a NEXT LOOK button which upon clicking will magically take you to... the next look!
the order of looks you see depends on where you came from. for example if you are surfing NEW, the NEXT button will take you to the next NEW look. if you clicked in from a user's profile, the NEXT button will take you to the next look posted by that user. when you've gone through all their looks, it will then take you back to their profile. simple, right?
oh, and for those who are more fond of using keyboard shortcuts rather than mousing and clicking, we've also made our hot keys more visible on the HOT / NEW / TOP pages as well as the look pages :)

NEW FEATURE: LB COLLECTIONS (AND MORE!)
WE'VE LAUNCHED LB COLLECTIONS!
On every look, find an "add to collection" link in the top right-hand corner—click it and you will be able to create, edit and manage your very own collection of looks. You can also "follow" any collections that other people make. (when we are done building a personalized homepage on LB, it will be the go-to place where you can see all the updates and activity from people you are a fan of, and collections you have followed.)
We already have automated collections for brands, countries and categories. But now, anyone can create their own collection for any purpose! To see what our sexy, simplified and redesigned collection pages look like, check out SWEDEN // LB as an example!
Think of collections as your own way to group looks together and present them the way you think is missing from LOOKBOOK.nu. If you think there a category on LB that is missing and people would want it, create a collection for it!
MORE EXCITING NEWS
1. Keep track of how much buzz your look is getting across the internet! We have added "blog reactions" to all looks, as well as to LOOKBOOK.nu in general. what this means is that any time someone blogs about your look it will appear there underneath the "BLOG REACTIONS" section of that look. similarly if you decide to add our badge or mention LOOKBOOK.nu on your blog or site, it will appear as a blog reaction on the side column of our front page.
2. You can hide or show all the modules on the right side. We admit, we've added a crap load of stuff to the right hand side column! if you don't care to see some of that junk, you can click on the header of each module to hide it, and it'll even remember your settings!
3. We have changed the TOP page to have the same layout as HOT and NEW. you still view the top looks of the day / week / month, but now you can surf in LIST mode as well as thumbails, and also filter by sex to see guys or girl only.
I hope that covers everything! We spent the last week working hard on these new changes, hope you all enjoy and feedback is very appreciated :)

hi everyone,
i wanted to let you all know—especially those who are moderators or members of GROUP lookbooks on here such as http://secondhand.lookbook.nu or http://monochrome.lookbook.nu—we will soon be retiring ALL group lookbooks in order to replace it with a new feature we feel will work better and produce more vibrant and interesting results.
we will soon be re-launching the feature as COLLECTIONS, where any user will be able to create a "collection" of looks (at [title].lookbook.nu) that only he or she, as the editor, can manage.. instead of creating groups which require people to join in order to contribute looks, the editor of a collection will be able to freely select looks to be added. the editor will be able to add any user's looks to his or her collection; we will also enable automated adding of looks posted by certain users.
our hope is that this will result in an endless plethora of community-driven "editorial" lookbooks that reflect the individual and unique tastes of our diverse members, WITHOUT the hassle of inviting group members in order to add their looks and having to approve or disapprove requests to join a group.
how will we keep track of notable and interesting collections? in the beginning we will keep an eye out on what kinds of collections you are making and showcase a "staff picks" page. but soon after we will give you the ability to "follow" all types of collections and sub-lookbooks (country lookbooks, brand lookbooks, and category lookbooks) and showcase which lookbooks have the most followers. we are building out a facebook-style homepage where you will be able to keep track of the lookbooks you are following, as well as the people you are a fan of.
so, if you are currently the moderator or member of a group and you would like to have first dibs on that group's URL when we release COLLECTIONS, please send me an email at yuri [at] lookbook.nu!

also, you may have already noticed, but we renamed LB CULTURE to LB FORUM. new update: you can now sort forum comments by date as well as points.

we've been getting multiple bug reports from people who are seeing errors when they try to upload a look.
we're busy trying to figure this out so please bear with us! part of the reason is because stupid Internet Explorer decided to go and change the way they handle jpeg files, the most common image filetype. (how retarded is that?)
anyway, if you are seeing an error page when you try to post a look or if it says your filetype is not valid then please leave a comment or email us including what type of computer (pc or mac) and what browser you are using (safari, ie, firefox, etc).
p.s. our recommended browser is Firefox by far, though if you use a mac, safari is usually good too.
thankss!

photos of children are not allowed
though it's not formally written in the guidelines, please have some sense and do not upload photos of children, even if its a photo of you when you were younger. this is not a kiddie fashion site.
if you must show off how cute you were as a toddler, please do it here: http://forum.lookbook.nu/show/805-Post-your-style-as-a-baby
thank you.

if you love to read fashion blogs and street style blogs (in addition to LB of course!), we highly recommend checking out a new site that just launched this week: http://streetstyl.es
this site basically aggregates photos from most of the popular blogs (as well as LOOKBOOK.nu) on one page, making it really easy to scan and browse the best looks from the likes of Sartorialist, Facehunter, and a host of other established as well as lesser known blogs.
we think this is a great idea, and since they were kind enough to include us in their "highly selective" collection of blogs, we felt like returning the favor. check them out, bookmark it, blog it, and help spread the word!

we have just launched a brand new colors feature that allows you to add a palette of up to five colors to each of your looks! by creating palettes for your looks you are also helping organize LOOKBOOK by colors. this is why it's very important that you only pick colors which are visible and apparent in your uploaded image!
in other words: don't tag colors that are hard or impossible to see in your photo. don't tag your outfit green if there is no green in your outfit. if your photo is black and white, we would prefer you not add a palette.
that way, if for instance you wanted to see examples of black and brown done well, you would be able to accurately search our extensive collection for ideas!
since this feature is new and we need help indexing all the looks that have no defined colors, for a limited time we are allowing any member to create a palette for any look that is lacking one. so if you feel like helping out the community, take some time to create palettes for your own looks as well as some others you particularly like! if you decide to make a palette for someone else, they will be notified and will have the ability to alter your palette as they like.
yes, we know, our initial color options may be lacking a few important color shades, so let us know which ones you want to see and we will add necessary colors very soon.
let us know what you think, and enjoy!

new KARMA FILTER: automated, karma-based moderation
// SHORT VERSION:
the NEW page now shows more looks by "proven" users with high average karma, and less looks by users with low average karma.
if you don't like this, you have the option of turning the Karma Filter off to reveal all looks.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
// LONG VERSION:
after hearing recurring concerns from several of you about the
moderation system (which required newcomer looks to be approved by
moderators before being published to the NEW page), we have finally
put it to an end. while it worked well in the beginning, as the site
began to grow it took way too long for users to get approved or
disapproved. also, with the growing number of users achieving
moderator status, several moderators were intentionally or
unintentionally misusing their powers.
so, in order to prevent the NEW page from being overflooded with looks
too quickly, we are now introducing a new, merit based system of
automatic moderation called the Karma Filter.
from our updated FAQ page:
"When the Karma Filter is turned on, the NEW page shows
more looks by users who have established a strong,
positive reputation within the community (as indicated by high average
karma per look) and less looks by users who have not.
Due to the high volume of looks added each day, the karma filter was
added to ensure that looks from established and proven users are given
greater priority and protected from being buried too quickly by looks
from new (unproven) users. The Karma Filter can optionally be turned
off to show looks posted by all users, regardless of their average
karma.
NOTE: Looks from users with lower reputation will still be visible,
but shown to a smaller portion of the community. If you are a newcomer
with no established reputation yet, your look will still be visible to
a significant portion."
read more about the Karma Filter and "reputation" here.
if you are thinking, "that's not fair, why should how much karma i
have determine how visible my looks are?" the answer is that although
average karma is not a perfect indicator of quality, it does directly
correspond to how many members find a look inspiring. we feel that
giving more weight to users with high average karma is the only fair
and merit-based way to moderate the new page. while we value diversity
and accept all types of fashion on this site, we hope that this system
will reward and encourage people to post more purposeful looks of high
quality and not just any random photos. this site is meant to show the
best in international street fashion, and we believe that with this
system it will incentivize quality and make quality looks more
prominent.
also, for those of you who simply want to see all looks posted by
all users, you may simply turn the karma filter off.
we understand these are pretty big changes and everyone may not be
completely happy, but we spent a great amount of thought and time into
creating a solution that is reasonable if still imperfect. we're fully willing to hear and consider your
input and concerns, just drop us a line in the comments or suggestions
box.

the unfortunate reality of free websites is that in order to stay free they eventually need to be ad supported at one point or another. we've experimented with Google Ads but unfortunately those revenues don't even nearly cover our growing monthly internet bills!
the bad news: we are now showing ads in between looks (once per each set of looks) on the HOT and NEW pages and also on the individual look pages. we understand if you have a knee-jerk reaction to these ads, but we're not just selling out—we're hungry and we need to eat!!!
the bright side is that we are doing this in partnership with the same company that runs banners for sites you probably know like last.fm, hypemachine, deviantart, and uber.com for example. that means that the ads will actually be promoting stuff like bands, movies, music, news and community sites, and fashion and accessory boutiques.
thanks for understanding.

we finally got around to making SEARCH on LB better. you can now search for looks, as well as users. for example, type "denim" into the search field and you'll get these results: http://lookbook.nu/search?q=denim.
we've also added search for LB culture if you want to locate specific topics. here is an example search for "60s": http://culture.lookbook.nu/search?q=60s

you may have noticed already, but we have put some google ads up and in case you had a negative reaction—we understand. we hate ads as much as anyone, but without them this site probably would not be able to continue running. we have moved to a new server that comes with massive internet bills, and showing a few advertisements as unintrusively as possible is the only we can make up some of the costs associated with maintaining the site.
we will soon be rolling out a sponsorship system intended for independent designers, crafters, store owners, publishers and any member with something of value to promote. it might be an online store, your fabulous website, upcoming event, shop sale announcement, some message you want to broadcast, or a special promo targeted at LB users. if you're interested, contact: ads [at] lookbook.nu for more information.
this site is brought to you free of charge by a couple who quit their jobs to promote grass roots fashion. thanks everyone for all your support and understanding.

also, for those of you who belong to group lookbooks: when you see a look or user that you think would fit in nicely with one or more of your groups, you can invite that person to join by clicking the "invite to group" link in the upper right hand corner of both the look as well as the user profile page.

see LOOKBOOK.nu colors on wearpalettes.com!
we are very proud to announce our new partnership with wear palettes, a design inspiration blog which will be extrapolating color palettes from some of the best outfits on LOOKBOOK.nu each day!
if your look is chosen as a palette, you will receive a "featured" badge on your look page and you will also be credited with a link back to your LOOKBOOK.nu profile on the wear palettes blog.
wear palettes was started by a Swiss design student named Daniel and previously collected outfits from the Sartorialist. it has been featured on style.com and selectism.com, along with many thousands of other blogs and websites. in September they'll talk about it on Glamour Italy, in October on Elle international.

underneath the comment box you'll see a checkbox that says "give love"—check it and a heart will be added along with your comment.
each user can only give out one love per day, so make your selection carefully.
you can keep track of looks you've loved and how many loves you've received in the STATS section of your profile page.

- added latest comments made by group members on the side column of the group lookbook
- added an indicator to show which contributors are the moderators of each group
if you want to be considered for a new group, please be sure to fill out the description, add looks, and show us who you'd invite. we want to understand your idea for the group and what kind of looks you would want to contribute to it, otherwise your group application won't be approved.

we have relaunched sub-lookbooks as group lookbooks— which means that each sub-lookbook will now be associated with a "group" that is moderated by one or more moderators.
in order to create a new sublookbook, you must first apply to be a moderator and show us which looks you want to be added, and who you want to enlist as contributors. after your look is approved, your group will be added to the main list and your invitations will be sent out.
group lookbooks can either be public or restricted. in public groups, anyone can join and contribute their looks, whereas in restricted groups, you either need to be invited or a moderator needs to approve your request to join.
once someone has joined a lookbook, the moderator may add or remove any of your looks to the group. to see the current list of group lookbooks click here. if you have an idea for a new group and you want to be the moderator, apply here!
hat tip to holly wang whose suggestion inspired this feature :)

UPDATE 7/30, 3PM: good bye new york, hello texas! our new home for lookbook.nu. the site should be stable now :)
UPDATE 7/30, 1PM: we're about to move the site to a temporary faster server, expect 15 minutes to 1 hour downtime.
UPDATE 7/30, 12PM: we've temporarily disabled the latest comments and online now features in order to keep the site online longer.
sorry everyone.. we are experiencing technical difficulties and that is why the site has been going down lately. we are receiving record high traffic this week, and it has pushed our poor server to its limits! it is under a lot of stress and we are working as hard as we can to fix it.
for the time being the site will be slow or sometimes down and unfortunately we can only ask that you please bear with us for now. we will keep you posted on all the developments, and we will be upgrading to a stronger, faster server very soon.
thanks for your patience and understanding,

updated guidelines, flagging, and category lookbooks
a few updates for this week...
we updated the site guidelines to try and make them a little more clear to everyone. please take the time to read them and understand them. as always.. we are open to your thoughts and suggestions.
now that the new guidelines are in place we have added look and comment flagging so that the community can get more involved. now any one can help moderate looks that are breaking the rules and comments that are inappropriate or offensive by flagging them.
look for the "flag this look" link on the way upper right hand side when you are viewing a look. the "flag" link for comment is at the bottom of every comment.
lastly, we added a listing of all the category lookbooks to the main HOT and NEW pages so you can browse lookbook by item categories easier (e.g. SOCKS.lookbook.nu, HATS.lookbook.nu, etc).
we're working on some more big stuff this weekend so stay tunedd..
oh yeah.. do you guys have any feedback on LB CULTURE? in case you don't know, the HYPE system works the same as it does on LOOKBOOK.nu (more hype promotes good topics to the top).
let us know if you like the feature..or if you think it's wack, let us know how we can make it better. thanks.

LB CULTURE is now up and running! big big thank you to everyone who submitted posts to help us get it started!! if you weren't sure what the feature was all about.. you can go check it out now: http://lookbook.nu/culture
couple things you should know:
1. if your submission was not included, don't be discouraged. it's not that we don't love you, we just wanted to select the best topics to set a good example in the beginning.
2. if you are a blogger, please don't just submit your blog without pointing to a specific article. the point is to submit conversation topics and inspirational content... so its cool to promote your site as long as u have something interesting to share!!
3. when posting a topic, try to make the title as appealing and descriptive as possible so that it'll be seen and replied to.
4. you are free to post anything you want, but please keep in mind what the LB community is interested in as a whole and try to keep the subject matter appropriate to this audience.
so what do you guys think? we hope you'll enjoy it, and maybe even get to know each other a little better with this.
thanks again for all your help!

one of the most oft-requested features we got from you guys was the ability to go from one look to the next look without having to click the back button. the reason we put this off was bc we just couldn't think of a way to do it without cluttering the layout of the look page. well, til now.
today we added some more HOT KEY SHORTCUTS to the look page that will allow you to some useful stuff without ever moving your mouse:
to go to the next/previous look on the list hit, n and p respectively
to go to the profile page of the person that posted the look, hit u
you can find the hot key legend in the bottom right corner of the HOT, NEW, and individual look pages.

shop.lookbook, designers, and the guidelines once again.
we re-thought the SHOP.lookbook.nu feature, and we decided to get rid of it. the original issue was that we wanted allow independent designers to post photos of other people modeling their creations but not have it show up in the main LOOKBOOK.nu (since it is against our guidelines). we wrestled with this for a while bc on one hand, if you are a designer and someone is wearing your creations, it technically is your style, but on the other hand, if LOOKBOOK.nu became filled with people posting their entire catalogues rather than photos of their own individual outfits, it would substantially move the site away from it's original purpose of showcasing personal style rather than photos of paid models.
what we decided to do is this: if you are selling any items in your looks, you can just check off a box that indicates it is for sale. an [FS] will be added to the look title to show that it has for-sale items, and those items will be marked with a ** on the look page.
since we want to support independent designers as much as possible.. we are going to allow (but not encourage) posting pictures of other people wearing their designed items. also.. if you are a fashion photographer and you style all your shoots, you may also post photos of other people, as some users have already done in the past. we feel in both cases, these people have a right to claim that the style is theirs.
to prevent the site from being overtaken with photos of non-users modeling for-sale items, we will add filters to allow browsing of non-for-sale looks only. if you have any thoughts on this, please feel free to drop us a line.

lots of new stuff so listen up! :)
1. RSS - all you web 2.0 nerds who love rss feeds can now get juicy LOOKBOOK.nu goodness in your feed readers! look for our orange feed icon on the main LOOKBOOK.nu page as well as every COUNTRY.lookbook and SUB.lookbook!
2. Photo editing - if you ever felt the need to rotate, crop, or add some basic touchups to your photos before posting them as looks, now you can! we have partnered with a great service called SnipShot (www.snipshot.com) to bring you slick photo editing in the browser. just check off the box that says "I want to rotate, crop, or edit my photo" on the POST A LOOK page to try it out!
3. Auto-scrolling forever - if you found it annoying to have to keep clicking "more" to see to the next page of looks.. you'll be glad to know that you can now scroll endlessly through the HOT and NEW pages...when you hit the bottom of any page of looks.. some crazy javascript magic will immediately and automatically load the next set. O_O
4. Edit your Country - if you went abroad but still want your looks to be posted to your home country's lookbook, you can go to your edit profile page and manually select your country. (we originally had it set to your ip-based location by default.)
5. All-time top looks - we added "all time" top looks to the TOP page by request.
6. Stats page - shows biggest karma gainers today and this week in addition to all time.
as always, thanks for enjoying LOOKBOOK and for your helpful feedback. time for us to get some sleep x_x

be sure to choose a category when you're tagging your items! you can now click into the category listings to browse looks by clothing type.
in addition to country sublookbooks (such as FINLAND.lookbook.nu) and SHOP.lookbook.nu (our special sublookbook for designers and store owners), these categories are *automatic* sublookbooks that you DON'T need to fill out when posting your looks. by tagging an item as a scarf, for example, your look will automatically be placed in SCARVES.lookbook.nu.
note: you do not need to post looks to your country's sublookbook because this is done automatically based on your IP location. some of you have requested the ability to set your country manually (so it does not change while you are traveling)--we will add this soon.

you can now reply directly to any comment! instead of just adding a new comment underneath, using the "reply" link will ensure that the original commenter is notified of what you said. once a reply has been made, the conversation becomes a thread which anyone can add to. hopefully this makes your conversations more enjoyable and long lasting :D

follow the guidelines people, seriously!
we have been receiving numerous complaints about people posting partial pictures that don't constitute full or nearly-full outfits.
PLEASE take the time to read the guidelines before you post your looks. Any photos which fail to follow them from now on will be promptly removed. (For example, looks that only show your face or your lower body).
also, please do not encourage people who post partial outfits or photos of other people by hyping their looks. you should hype looks based on the aesthetic of the entire outfit, not just one part of it.
we made this site for you to enjoy, not for us to police! please help make our job easier. if you have any issues with our current set of guidelines, we'd be happy to discuss them with you. just shoot us an email at hello [at] lookbook [dot] nu.
thanks!
(we still love all of you)

if you are a designer or boutique / etsy / ebay store owner:
SHOP.lookbook.nu is a new sublookbook we have reserved just for all the members who wish to promote their own designs and for sale items.
we've tweaked the guidelines a bit so that you can now post looks containing your designs or hand made items that are modelled by someone other than you. when you post looks, you'll have the option of checking a box indicating that something you're wearing is for sale. if YOU are wearing the clothes, it will be posted to the main lookbook as well as SHOP.lookbook.nu. if not, it will only be posted to SHOP.lookbook.nu and the karma gained from those looks will not be awarded to your user profile.
this way, the main lookbook remains a place dedicated (and restricted) to personal style, while SHOP.lookbook provides a promotional channel for indie designers, store owners, and people that just want to empty their closets a bit. everyone wins! everyone happy?
UPDATE: do not post a look to SHOP.lookbook by entering it in as your sublookbook! at the top of the look edit page you will see a box that says "I am selling items in this look." Checking that box will automatically place your look in SHOP.lookbook.

we released a new moderation system that gives mods the the ability to approve (or disapprove) pending looks without having to actually "hype" them. this change was implemented so that moderators could approve looks they would not necessarily hype, but are still stylish in their own way. moderators can also disapprove looks that fail to follow the guidelines or are distasteful / inappropriate.

we just wanted to take a second to remind all our members that despite the sometimes competitive nature of our site, the voting system is nothing more than our own way of showcasing the most popular looks on the site. it does NOT in any way determine of how good or bad your style is..
we are firm believers in the idea that fashion is individual expression, and we welcome all types of styles, regardless of how much hype you receive on your looks. the bottom line is, we encourage everyone to post simply for the sake of sharing and contributing your own unique style. (everything else should be an afterthought.)

a couple of you guys made the suggestion of interviewing top users on LOOKBOOK every so often and we thought it was a great idea...so we gave it a shot, and today we posted our first interview! it features our very own Whitney Fierce from LA, and you can read the whole thing here.
as always, we'd love to know what you think...are there any questions we missed and should include in future interviews? leave a comment!
also, big thanks to Whitney for her incredible answers.
lastly--another update we just added was the ability to save looks. when you go around hyping lots of looks, its easy to lose track of the ones you REALLY luved and wanted to bookmark for future reference. now you can click the "add to saved looks" link on any look page, and the look will be saved in your SAVED LOOKS, which you can always find the link to in your top right menu.

we launched a new feature yesterday which some of you might have noticed---sub-lookbooks!
you can now post your looks to any "sub-lookbook" of your choosing. Sub-lookbooks are basically the same concept as the main LOOKBOOK, except they can be used to group looks together into categories, topics, or fashion "niches." are you proud of your outfit that's entirely (or almost entirely) thrifted?? post it to THRIFTED.lookbook.nu. Want to show off your dope new sneakers? Post your look to SNEAKERS.lookbook.nu. also, all you guys from superfuture and all you girls from the fashion spot can feel more at home by posting to SUFU.lookbook.nu or TFS.lookbook.nu (if you choose to.. it's all up to you). we're leaving it pretty open-ended so that you can use it however you like.
this feature is still in really early stages.. so we'd like to ask you all to help us test it out and let us know what you think. thanks, in advance :D
edit: to clarify, posting to a sub-lookbook DOES NOT mean that it won't be posted to the main LOOKBOOK. sub-lookbooks are merely a subset of the main one. (good question vik r.)

negative comments are not ok..
we are still in the process of building comment-related features, most importantly the ability to flag offensive or inappropriate feedback. for now, if anyone leaves you feedback that is nasty, snobby, or in any way negative, please let us know immediately so we know about bad apples in the community and can remove them if necessary.
LOOKBOOK is for people who appreciate eclectic taste in style. giving and receiving feedback on looks is a big part of the community, but it's important to remain positive and constructive, rather than tear people down. If you don't think a person's look works particularly well, by all means make a suggestion! but if you can't do that without being condescending, keep it to yourself. there's lots of places on the internet you can go to be a jerk, but LOOKBOOK.nu is not one of them!

By popular demand, user messaging
so, many of you have asked for a user-to-user private messaging system. we heard you! ...BUT we didn't want to build yet another inbox that makes you login to read / reply to messages.
instead of reinventing the wheel, we added a "send a message" link to each user's profile page that'll let you get in touch with anyone directly and privately. they'll receive your message in their email with your email as the reply-to field so they can directly respond to you if they want.
i think this is easier for everyone..but i could be wrong! let me know if you think forum style PM's are better than straight up email. thanks :D

LOOKBOOK is open! and other important news
hi LOOKBOOKers,
just wanted to keep you posted on some important changes--
1. LOOKBOOK.nu is now open!
registration still requires an invite code, but the site is now open for the public to see! if you blog, please tell your readers and fellow bloggers about our new site :)
2. new Moderation system
so..lots of you have asked "what is karma for?"..as if there's anything in the universe more important than reputation! well, here is another reason:
we implemented a new moderation system on LOOKBOOK, and here is how it works: when new users join LB and post for the first time, their submissions will only get published to the NEW page after they've been approved (i.e. hyped) by experienced users with a certain (very attainable) level of karma. that means all of you who are now Moderators--you'll know who you are--will see a "PENDING" tab on the navigation menu whenever are new looks to be reviewed.
if you hype a pending look, you will help bump it onto the NEW page, and subsequent looks from that user will bypass the approval process. however, if a look has not been approved by any moderator after a certain amount of time, it will fall out of the queue..
why are we doing this?
(1) to reward and empower users who contribute to LOOKBOOK, and (2) to better manage the influx of new posts as the community expands. instead of moderating posts ourselves, we're going to let YOU guys be the guardians of quality on LOOKBOOK.
if you've read this far..leave a comment!
thanks :D

when you go to someone's profile page and you're like "this guy has mad steez!" or "this girl has crazy style!" what do you do?
answer: click on the new [ BECOME A FAN ] link to show your love for that person!
that person will show up on your profile in the "FAN OF.." section underneath your "ABOUT" blurb, and you'll have the choice of subscribing to them via email and getting notified when they post new looks.
