Thomas Burberry developed the trench coat as an alternative to the heavy serge greatcoats worn by the British soldiers in the First World War. It was an optional item of dress for higher and warrant officers, when no other military rank members were permitted to wear them. With that much of rich history for a particular coat, it deserves a heavy rotation for your outerwear.
