The #1 source for fashion inspiration from real people around the world.
We were watching G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and a friend asked me who I liked better—Storm Shadow or Snake Eyes. I told him I kinda liked them both, and he said, “It’s either you’re black or you’re white—you can’t be both.†Which is just plain silly, if you ask me. Because there are just times when you enjoy two completely different things at once, maybe because the feeling of being caught in between is just sublime.
Growing up I have learned to cherish the little grey areas in my life. Should I finish medical school, or follow my heart to become a writer? Should I stay put in my little town, or try to make it in the big city? Fashion industry, or music industry? Of course, as time goes by, one eventually wins over the other. But it was being stuck between two places that allowed for more brilliant ideas to flow. As Johnny Depp once said, “I pretty much try to stay in a constant state of confusion just because of the expression it leaves on my face.†And look at how many films that face was asked to grace.
Speaking of Johnny Depp, another grey area that’s been hanging like a dark cloud above my head all these years is his breakup with Kate Moss. Why did they have to hit splitsville? They were such a perfect couple. What went wrong? Then again, perhaps it all had something to do with another grey area: Was it love, or just infatuation? Perhaps it was just an infatuation gone bad—you know, like the kind that Placebo sings about in their song “Every You Every Me†from the Cruel Intentions soundtrack.
And speaking of Placebo, I guess it is worth mentioning now that their lead vocalist and guitarist Brian Molko once said, “I believe very strongly that when it comes to desire, when it comes to attraction, that things are never black and white, things are very much shades of grey.â€
So please don’t ask me why I cannot choose between black and white. Because sometimes it’s ambiguity that drives my very core, and that’s why I’d rather go for grey.
I cannot even decide on what kind of grey I like the most. Because at times I go for xanadu (greenish-grey), or liver (brownish-grey), or arsenic (dark bluish-grey). Today I’m all about slate grey. And don’t ask.
Oh, by the way, the title of this look is a line from “All Cats Are Grey†by The Cure.
