John Galliano Fall Winter 2009 Ready -to-wear
by Marcio Madeira for STYLE.COM

Before learning about Fortuny, Cristobal Balenciaga, LElong, Madame Gres, Jeanne Lanvin, Patou, Charles James and all the great couturiers of the early century, my first vivid couture exposure was the work of Christian Dior in 1947 baptized by the legendary Carmel Snow as the "New Look". That image was a famous photograph by Willy Maywald of “Le Bar”. The image of this woman in immaculate clothing sparked my love affair with fashion. Skip to 1996 when John Galliano took helm of the house of Dior, my passion for couture design went over the roof. John brought a new spirit to the house and sealed my passion for clothing design. Its one of the reasons why I love fashion so much because of both of them. Fast forward to fall winter 2009, John designed an immaculate collection of amazing clothes and shoes that was so beautiful it moved me because not only were the clothes, models, accessories amazing but the entire set, the snow effect, the makeup, the music, the entire production. Sadly with the recent issues John has entangled himself with, I dont know what will become of him. Time will only tell. But despite all these, I cannot deny myself that he is a genius. The new collections at Dior lacked the vision he once imbued the house.

About the look:
Funny that I never intended this look to be an ode to Galliano. What started off with this look were in fact the ski boots and the floral blazer. I just wanted to wear both of them together. In the course of styling I ended choosing this Egyptian djellaba and styling it in my usual love for cross cultural referencing:) Only when I saw the photo of this post did I realize this looked like something subconsciously inspired from John Galliano's 2009 fall show. Though the inspirations were different(russian balkan folklore and mine is hawaiian egyptian) the use of cross cultural referencing was very much him too:)!!! And suddenly everything became a dejavu, like reliving my early years, as if I was being amazed again by fashion just like how I was when I saw Dior's New Look and Galliano's work. I like the idea of rejuvenation of spirit and John just did that:)

Wearing two jackets and mixing similar colored prints-brilliant! I love how there is a lot of effort put into your writing with sources and how you even uploaded additional images; a true fashion lover!
