One night in an old Irish tavern, Jack, an a various and drunkard blacksmith ran into the Devil. As usual, he tried to win his soul through Machiavellian maneuvers … Prior to selling his soul, Jack asked one last favor to the Devil: to pay him a drink. The Devil turned into six pence coin that Jack hastened to lock in his purse adorned with a silver cross, preventing the demon to escape. Jack then gave liberty to the devil as long as this one didn’t come to claim his soul for ten years …
Ten years later, the Devil came to claim his due. But Jack managed to cheat on the Devil : Jack won the promise that he never return to claim his soul.
At his death, punished for his life of debauchery, Jack was denied the gates of paradise. In despair, he went to the Devil, who sent him back where he came from. Jack then asked the Devil if he had nothing to light his way. In a gesture of kindness, the Devil gave him a burning coal which Jack then placed in a turnip to disappear into the icy wind of the end of October.
Today the turnip was replaced with a pumpkin Jack O’Lantern but still wanders on the Halloween’s night …
