The one big misconception I managed to correct over the past three years about Japanese fashion is that it's not just tantamount to cute or "kawaii." Likewise, it's a common misunderstanding to consider Japanese culture as the epitome of "weird" as well.
Thankfully, with the influx of Japanese magazines in the country and Asian fashion inspired blogs, we get a bigger world view of the Japanese culture in general (and their fashion scene).
Now, I'd like to think of Japanese fashion--street or traditional--as an oxymoron. Like how they all strive to be unique, I reckon, from the Western approach in style, and yet want to be a part of a certain subculture. Simply put, Japanese people want to dress differently to be like their peers.
