Halloween Costume

Harajuku
Inspiration:
I worked on my niece's outfit for over a month! Harajuku barbie was her theme and she became my inspiration for my costume. I couldn't figure out what I wanted to be for Halloween, so I decided to just complement her outfit and do my take on Harajuku Fashion. I love the Harajuku culture. I would love to visit Japan one day and educate myself on their take on fashion.

I wanted something fun and playful. I didn't want to go towards a direction I felt other people would most likely do. At first glance, you wouldn't know what I was trying to portray, but having my niece standing next to me throughout the night helped. lol

I did a ton of DIY projects for this "costume" only because I had 24 hours to bring the look together. I shopped at my local thrift store where I bought these stuff animals. I also went over to Michaels to buy some fabric paint. Everything else, I already had at home.

DIY Projects:

1. I hand sewed all the pieces together starting with the hat. I had an old snapback I bought at Dollar Tree years ago. I sewed on a puppet giraffe I bought at Goodwill just to give the hat some character. My sewing skills aren't the best, but I love how the hat turned out! How often would you see something like this? I just might wear this once in a while!

2. Necktie necklace: At Goodwill, I ran into a fun necktie and this leopard print pink bear. I had to pair them together; therefore, it turned into a necklace. I'm pretty proud of it. It's another statement piece. Based on my research on Harajuku Fashion, everything has to be a statement!

3. Socks: I have a ton of knee high socks so I grabbed one from my drawer and started painting on this "giraffe-like" print. I thought of Nicki Minaj's outfit from Superbass the entire time I was working on this which is PERFECT for this costume because she is a Harajuku Barbie! I loved how it turned out; in fact, I need to work on a second sock (in a different color) so I can wear them together! Yes, I totally would! :)

4. Shoes: Probably my favorite DIY piece in this whole outfit. I had a pair of old white shoes I was no longer using. I wanted to bring it back to life so I went happy with the paint. I chose to use a variety of colors to make it pop! I sewed on the stuff animals because I am in LOVE with the multiple sneakers Jeremy Scott and Adidas have created through their collaboration! I love how it turned out. I think it definitely ties in that playful character I wanted.

Overall, I had fun with this. It brought me back to being a "care-free" kid. I love the Japanese culture and hopefully did them some justice. Lastly, my niece loved the fact I was dressing up like her so that's really all that matters. :)

I only spent less than $10 on this costume. You'll be surprise with what you already have in your closet!

Misc stuffed animals: $4 (Goodwill)
Fabric paint: $5

From my closet:
Pink bomber jacket: Thrifted
Shirt: Forever 21
Denim Vest: Topman for Nordstrom
Paisley trousers: Ralph Lauren

Calm down. This was a HALLOWEEN costume. It's not like I was wearing this to work. I don't need you to validate my sense of style. It is what it is.
