Baba Marta (Grandma March) is celebrated on March 1 for over a thousand years. In Bulgarian folklore the name Baba Marta is related to a grumpy old lady whose mood changes very rapidly. We exchange small pieces of adornments, martenitsi are always given as gifts. It is supposed for people never to buy martenitsi for themselves. They are given to loved ones, friends, and those people to whom one feels close. They are worn on clothing, or around the wrist or neck, made of white and red yarn until we see a stork or a blooming tree. The red and white woven threads symbolize the wish for good health. They are the heralds of the coming of spring in Bulgaria and life in general.

To honour this day and to get some more holiday mood, I dressed as a human martenitsa today :)

Thank you very much, dear! I'm glad you like the story! I like telling stories about bulgarian culture and history, as I like learning such for other cultures :)

It's an 8000 year-old tradition from the geto-dacian people. They thought the crossing between red and white will scare off bad luck :). Romania being a mix between romans and dacians, kept the tradition alive :D. I have Bulgarian roots as well btw ^^
Vassy M.
You don't say! The last one for sure made my day! :) So happy to have "met" you! :)
Ruxandra Ioana
My grandfather from my father's side was 100% bulgarian. He married my romanian grandmother :) . I was always curious about my past and yet, never been in Bulgaria. I want to visit someday.
It's nice to meet you too ^^
Vassy M.
Wish you to fulfil this goal soon! There is so much to see here! Maybe we should keep this topic on at some more private way ;)
