An excerpt from one of my new slam poems:
"Leave your house. Drive slowly. Find yourself in a part of town you have never been. If you discover a park pick a flower and pull off each petal one by one. Crush it between your fingers. Find a dead end. Call it home Contemplate driving off the edge of home...
Once again ask yourself:
Do you feel anything yet?
Let me remind you: Eat, sleep, breathe. Not doing the first two? Consolation prize: the third one is inevitable.
Next: go off by yourself. Sit down for burnt coffee with your headphones in. look unapproachable. Drink slowly. Watch people.
Smile too widely at anyone who meets your eyes. Maybe you brightened their day. Maybe you weirded them out. When they turn away wonder how long they will remember your face.
Remember: You aren't important to them, you are only a stranger.
Then, take out your notebook. Force yourself to write. Purge yourself on paper til you feel empty. Or something close to the feeling of empty
Settle for apathy.
Settle for breathing heavily.
Settle for empty of the things that used to make you feel so full."
