Having immigrated from China in their early twenties, my parents flew to New York to attend graduate school with less than $100 in their pockets. Like everyone else who immigrated to New York, they were in search of better, more fulfilling lives for themselves, their parents, and the children that they would have (aka me and my brother!). What kept them going despite working below minimum wage waiting tables in Chinese restaurants all the while keeping up with their studies were the quintessentially "New York" images and promises, like the lights in Times Square during Christmas time. For them, the Big Apple was a stepping stone, and without their struggles I wouldn't have been able to pursue any of my own dreams and creative endeavors. In this respect, I, like many others, have always seen New York as a city of dreams, unfaltering in its ability to prove time and time again that people can transform nothing into something. In terms of my own dreams concerning fashion and my growth as a blogger, I see attending New York Fashion Week on behalf of Lookbook as a branch of my parents' dreams. They wanted to see their children have the fundamental necessities and upbringing to live their dreams, and doing so would only prove that they truly succeeded, back in the city that started it all. I wholeheartedly appreciate the time and effort that goes into each designers' designs, and I adore meeting other talented individuals within the fashion industry. Fashion and the blogosphere is an integral part of my life, and going to NYFW during September has always been a goal of mine. I'd absolutely love to win this contest in order to validate what my parents worked for and be able to witness the dream-fulfilling magic of New York with my own eyes. It'd mean the world to me if you would all show this look some love x!
