~ She longed for happiness, like no other. She searched for promise, and sought a forever she did not comprehend ~
In the midnight hush, the ticking commences…
Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock; on and on. The ‘silence’ of the night surrounds me; the hum of the laptop motor, obnoxiously loud with nothing to drown it out, the creaking of the floorboards as the halls stretch and groan in place, the eerie swish of fabric slithering against one another. In the distance, the sporadic passage of lone cars interrupts the tentative quiet after the storm. Their engines breathing heavily, motors alive and booming, they ride by anonymous, and as they wade through the spray, they’re gone again. A frustrated toss to the left leaves me staring at the just visible ceiling, and I imagine the wonder of all that surrounds me, just beyond my reach. I squeeze my eyes shut, clenching my hands into tight fists and curling my toes. I lay that way for what seems an eternity; until my palms sting from the pressure of my nails, and my toes ache from the strain. Exhaling, I release.
“Someone is getting married” I breathe. Rolling to the window, I tug Poochy and tuck him under my arm. It was true of course. Somewhere, someone was having a baby, bungee jumping and laughing. Hugging my legs to my chest, I shut my eyes once more.
~ She longed for all she could not possess, and never stopped to look at all she had. She did not see the life she was missing, as she stood watching the lives they inhabited~
My Mohawk is blown in the wind, as I walk through town. The January chill sends us in search of warmth, and we find ourselves at an intimate coffee shop, with a set of spiral stairs that capture my heart. We have a latte each, and she has a chocolate chip biscotti. And as we flip through our prospective camera rolls, and laugh about the stranger that kissed our cheeks and the birds we’re certain planned that attack, it hits me. Someone somewhere may be engaged. Someone somewhere may have been kissed. But someone somewhere may be yearning for a coffee with a best friend, or a photography day out, or simply a bed they can lay awake in.
