So I'm a business major with a marketing emphasis & obviously a love of fashion.
At the beginning of summer, I brought 2 bags of clothes to Buffalo Exchange, the store that buys & resells nice clothes, & the dude chose nothing! I was dressed super casual, no make-up, with a quiet disposition, & the guy told me my clothes were too cheap!
My sister & I devised a plan to position ourselves & our clothing as upscale. We took the Forever21 tags off with seam-rippers, then folded the clothes, put the "label" clothes like Juicy on top, put them in Nordstrom bags, & sprayed them with perfume. My sister & I dressed classy with clean lipstick & crystal jewelry, & we were sure the smile & chat with the workers.
We set off to Buffalo Exchange with ourselves & our clothes "positioned" as more expensive, & found some success. We each took a bag to a clothes-sorter to diversify the odds, & the dude sorting mine took nothing! The girl sorting my sister's bag, however, took $21 of clothes--success! So we think the girls working there know more about fashion... & I got these vintage, chunky heels for $8 too!
Marketing experiment result: people WILL take you more seriously if you present yourself in a positive fashion :)
*sidenote, I hate Maroon5, that is my sisters room :p
