I wore this outfit in early September. It was a warm night, and I had plans to go out for drinks. I was in a rush getting ready, so my outfit came together less from thoughtful planning and more from grabbing what I could easily reach in my closet. But it worked. It worked so well, in fact, that I wore it again the following week on another evening out.
Once I’ve worn an outfit twice, I add it to my list of outfits to photograph. It doesn’t matter if it’s an exciting outfit, I mostly wear some combination of jeans, sweater and accessories. That’s what works for me, so, increasingly, that’s what I try to share. The problem is that I don’t always feel like I need to rush to photograph outfits made up of pieces just sitting in my closet. I have all the pieces, so there is no need to worry about timing.
Except there is, of course. Timing is everything. And it’s particularly important in Winnipeg, something I failed to consider this season. It was late October by the time I actually decided we should capture this look in pictures. The temperature abruptly dropped below zero and snow fell. But I would only have to take my coat off for a few minutes, I reasoned. How bad could it possibly be?
The answer, my friends, is very bad indeed. I was freezing by the time we arrived at our location. And that was before I even took my coat off. The ten minutes I spent pacing up and down the sidewalk while Ian captured the shots were excruciating. If you look closely, you can probably see my goosebumps! It was painful, and I very quickly learned my lesson. Timing is important, and no outfit is cute enough to justify risking frostbite.
I expect we’ll be capturing a few less winter outfits this season than we usually do. And you know what? That’s okay. I’m confident that the world will keep spinning on its axis regardless of how many times a week I’m able to post, and it’s refreshing to feel that way after so many years of sticking to a rigorous schedule. Maybe, just maybe, I’m learning to relax a little…? I have my doubts, but anything is possible.
