So I'm struggling to understand how exactly we earn karma here on Lookbook. I'm thinking it's about hyping and commenting on other people's looks and that you will get more karma.

According to my profile, I have give 106 hypes, made 116 comments and yet my karma is only 4/2? Is this right? I'm looking at some of the top looks and the karma is far higher but they have given out less hypes and comments.

What is going on here?

Karma is how many hypes you have on all of your look combined. next to the karma (after the /) is your average karma for your looks.

the comments and hypes you give have nothing to do with it.

e.g. you have 2 looks. one has 0 hype, the other has 4. 4/2 = 2

so your karma / average: 4 / 2

I see. So basically the karma filter works on blocking out new people even if they have interesting looks? And the karma system isn't really based on the true definition of 'karma'? WHO THOUGHT OF THIS CRAZY SYSTEM?

Apologies Camile - I forgot to thank you for your helpful reply in explaining what the Karma rating meant in my profile. And I wasn't having a go at you so please don't take it that way! Corinne, I've been reading a little about what people think of the karma filters and I still can't really see why people think it's a good idea.

The latest I read up to was that people in favour are saying that the karma filter works as you only get to see people who are deserving of hype. But how exactly do people get past the filter in the first place?

The KF is such a controversial topic. Why don't they just get rid of it so people can be at peace. If they don't like it, too bad, because I see people that are worthy of hype, but no one can see their pictures.

hah no problem. i find it odd as well that karma is in no way related to its actual meaning.

Corrine - thanks for the tip - I turned the Karma Filter off today and it's quite refreshing to see some looks that would otherwise have been swept under the carpet.

I understand why there is a KF - as Lookbook's membership increases, there should be a system in place that rewards it's faithful accounts but I think it needs changing or updating. There's no way of telling if your look will be visible or how many people will see it.

From the FAQ, for every hype you give, you earn a karma point, but there is no way of telling how many karma points you have - this should be shown in your profile.

Glad you didn't take my post the wrong way, Camille :)

Oh now I too understand it comblitely..so it really has nothing to do with "karma" (=how much you have hyped/viewed looks/commented on them), but popularity/photographical skills etc.. Yeah.. :S

I just noticed on my lb page that suddenly today there have been two hypes and two comments disappeared..So is it possible to person delete hypes that they`ve gave to someone...(deleting comments is possible I guess..)?

Yes, it is possible to delete both comments and hypes. To delete a hype you gave someone, you click the hype button again. The delete comment function should be with "Edit".

By the way, is this a common thing here, to unhype? Does that happen to you guys ever? Not that I really care that much, but am a bit curious. And offcourse it would be nice to be seen in new-section with karma filter on (those who use it, I dont)..although, I have no idea how many hypes that aqcuires (and that are my looks already be seen there or not..)?

yeah ive had it before too. i guess you just regained two hypes ;)

I guess the only way to overcome the karma filter is to post in the forum and to comment other people. Other than that there is no way of being hyped!

By the way, what is the threshold for being seen with the karma filter? Do you need a certain number of hypes?

does the karma filter count average karma or overall?

i hate it when a look im really proud of gets overlooked because of the filter. i take good quality pictures, comment and hype others looks, and post here occasionally and i still dont think im past the filter. :/

I've only reallly started posting looks but the best advice I can give is try post every other day so that people get to see your looks on a regular bascis. Your first few looks might not get much hype but eventually people will recongise you on the "new" page and hype you.

Only advice I can give. I personally don't really care about getting alot of hypes it's just cool to have people say I have a nice style. Just be yourself enjoy posting looks and soon the karma will come to you!

I always have my filter off because i hype for the look and nothing else. I think the karma system should have something to do with how many people you hype and when you comment.
For now we will just have to live with the fact that there is a filter and its not easy to get past it.
I dont think we should worry so much about the hypes, imstead we should be happy with our looks and be excited whenever someone looks at them :) Be proud of your style.

Me too !
In general the whole karma system is trashy, I think. More members should turn off their karma filter.

I always turn the Karma filter off too because I get so bored of looking at the same people all day, no wander they have such high "fan bases" etc because nobody else is seen.
I like the idea of being able to keep up with your favourite lookbookers but thats why you fan them no?x

The K/F is frustrating. I understand it though. Lookbook.nu is a business, and the K/F makes you want to bombard every one of your friends and get them to stop whatever they are doing... and Hype your look. lol. I have a total of 3 friends that actually care about fashion, I'm not going to bother all of my other ones.

If the K/F frustrates you, keep it off and hype whoever you think has great style. :)

I can see the pros and cons of the karma filter, but I definitely think the downside is that it seems like I'm always seeing looks from the same people when there are a lot more people out in LB land with amazing looks too and just not a lot of fans.

I didn't know the filter could be turned off, but I'll definitely be doing that.

What I don't get is why there is Hot and New, but New isn't based solely on who posted in what order. I think HOT should be reserved for organizing looks in order of Hype and New should be reserved for organizing looks in order of post time stamp.

Let me just use this subject to say that I am finding it incredibly difficult to achieve a legit exchanging experience around here...
A few people comment on my looks saying things like "Amazing!", "Love your style!" - then I browse around the New page and they are doing exactly the same with everyone.
I mean, does anybody actually care about what we're posting or they just interact to get hypes and fans back?
As a result, when I write honest compliments to people that really inspire me, most don't care; and maybe that's because there is all this fake thing going on everywhere.
:(

this has been brought up several times on the forum over the years. in a nutshell, this site has loads of fake and insincere people. you'll learn to recognise them, just ignore them and don't bother hyping them back if you don't want to. you keep writing the way you do and pay them no attention because there will be somebody who appreciates your honesty, even if the majority doesn't care

also, many people on here have hopes of becoming hot page material, that's why they are so insincere, they just want to get to the top. just enjoy it here and don't take it so seriously like them
