I think people overestimate it, I mean, even though 2 airbuses managed to have an accident, doesn't mean every airbus must have an accident. Beside, there's always medications which can make you calmer. My sister is exactly like you, and the two pasts accidents doesn't make it any more less terrifying. Whenever the plane is going up, read a magazine, it'll be over before you even know!

good luck though, and, Sweden is beautiful so will have something to look forward to =)

On the other side, I was petrified at my first flight, but was because we had a shitty pilot and lots of turbulence.

I faintly remember my first flight. I was 3 and on my way to Munich, Germany. I do remember I had fun though. I've never been afraid of flying, I just hate how long it takes. The shortest flight I've been on was 19 hours - yeah, that was the shortest. What makes it worse is that I can't sleep on planes, so I spend hours and hours watching movies, listening to music, and observing people.

sometimes I hyperventilate a bit when we're taking off or touching down, or when there's turbulence, but once when you're up there and looking down on all the clouds, I find it fantastic. =)

when i was little i loved looking down on the clouds and i loved when the plane was taking off and it was going so fast and the thought of that now makes me sick, lmao
i wory so much about what could happen, im always thinking "what if", even though thousands and thousands of planes travel every day, and only around 10 crash every year im still convinced i will die if i get on a plane hahaha

its stupid when i think about it, i love driving and cars crash alot, last thursday there was 3 accidents in the space of 10 minutes on the same road with 40 cars and 2 petrol tankers on a road 5 minutes from where i live and im still quite happy to drive :|

the excuse i use is "i can walk out of a car, swim out of a boat, but i cant fly out of a plane" ahahahaha x

I never thought about it when I was little, so it didn't affect me, but at age 11 or so after not flying for a few years I was on a plane and started hysterically crying when it took off, I was so terrified. all of a sudden I realized that we were in a little metal can thousands upon thousands of feet IN THE AIR and if it decided not to be in the air anymore, we were all going to die horribly.

took me years to get over, but now I'm just incredibly on edge (as opposed to hysterical) whenever I fly. sometimes I can zone out, and not be so aware of where I am. if there's turbulence, all bets are off and I'm sure we're all going to die. it's a good time.

at least I've only had to go on little shuttle-esque flights the past couple years, then it's not so bad.

I'm terrified of flying. Never used to be really bad until 9/11 I think but then I got more scared than I was before. Before the flight I'm shaking like a leaf! I hate the taking off, I always think it's just gonna crash back down onto the runway! I think once the seatbelt sign goes off I feel ok unless turbulence happens and then I hide behind a magazine and hope lol. I do love looking out the window at the clouds or at the countries below but I always seem to get a seat right over the wing which freaks me out cos I'm looking at it moving in the wind which doesn't look great to me!

I think the worst flight I've been on was on the way back from Spain in 2006, we had really bad turbulence and it was lightning. I thought I was going to die! It lasted about 5 mins and they were the worst 5 mins ever!!

i think another reason i hate it is cause my mum is disabled, and if something happened to the plane and we all had to get out fast, well she cant!
But we almost always get upgraded to fist class for free just cause she cant walk properly, which isnt too bad haha

It's more the boredom that worries me than the actual fear of crashing or anything - I can't sit still or stare at the tiny TV or out of the window, I always have to be doing something so the idea of an 8hr+ plane journey terrifies me.

Remember that hundreds, thousands (millions?) of planes travel over the world every day and that the airlines take every possible safety precaution, even though flying's many times safer than driving.

haha ive came up with a theory that sort of calms me down abit
if i sit in the middle of the plane, if it falls down while its taking off i wont be at the back so i'll be fine and if it crashes when its landing i wont be at the front so i'll be fine
only problem is when they dont sit me in the middle and im at the back or the front... it makes me worry more D: D:

EEEEEEEEEEEP! 9 hours until i have to get on a plane D: D: D: if i die, i love you

I'm not exactly scared of flying as much as I really, truly hate it. I get so sick and just the thought of it makes me want to throw up. This really sucks because I love going to new places and am actually going to be going on a 6 hour flight in 2 days. I know 6 hours isn't half as bad as those 15 hour flights, but I just can't stand the thought of sitting there for 6 hours. I can never sleep on a plane...ever! =\ Any ideas on how to make the time go by faster?

Chrisis sucks. Planes are getting on air again only like half an hour after they reached the airport because companies don't want to waste enough time doing check ups and all, because that time means money.

@Reshara A.

If you got one of the newer ipods (nano 4th, touch etc) you could always download some movies. However, if you got a computer, you can watch a movie on that. My best advice is to bring a good book and some good music + a magazine.

That'll I do when I'm flying 5 hour tomorrow.

i am more scared of flying the older i get! i think it's because i think a lot now vs. when i was younger. last time i went on a plane was a year ago, and the friend i was with was not scared at all, and i tried to absorb her attitude of dealing with turbulance. but, one of my biggest fears is crashing in a plane, so i get scared no matter what. this december, i'm going on a trip to thailand, and it will be the longest plane ride for me to date! aaannd i'm just going to have to deal with it!

the first i've been on a plane was to go to Salvador it was a good trip going there, but on the way coming back to California was awful, it was really windy so the plane was moving a lot. it was scary.
but it was worth it.

if your in a car going 80 and something goes wrong theres nothing you can do about it.
if you are in a high floor of a building and there is an earth quake oh noo!
you have a bettter chance at getting a disease tomorrow then you do on getting in a plane crash.

all of these things you are more then likely not afraid of (which are way more dangerous), so try to think about the situation logically and most fears are overcame pretty easy that way.

i supose, but to quote the scrubs episode im watching (hahahaha) "statistics mean nothing to the individual" i mean you could be in a terrible car crash, in a huge earthquake, get a disease and still survive. or you could be at home one day and fall over, hit your head and die, i supose its just luck really...
