"The Grand Scheme for the Fate of Things Great and Small.
1. To vanquish those nostalgics who have taken the guise and stance of an ealier generation and in doing so, etched 'retro' indelibly into our collective gravestone.
[...]" (Nation of Ulysses, 1991)
damn, this is nowadays more actual than at the time when it was written. in music, fashion, culture in general.
what fashion is depends on what we take it to be, and maybe even more on what we *want* it to be. already with the riot grrrl movement it became clear that "fashion" is highly context dependent, that fashion, style and sex-appeal do not necessarily include "objectification" (i.e. a woman being told how to look like in order to be sufficiently desirable, or at least being forced to distinguish herself from those who already fit the ideal, thus suffering from the lack of objectification), but that objectification can, in fact, be redefined. the standards of fashion are vague and floating between different approaches to this term.
we live in the time of an immense recycling of cultural mass-production, which adds even more trash to the pile which is actually supposed to be recycled.
i say: fuck cat-walks which are made for the sake of consumerist culture, fuck industry served from-above-for-above and for "those who can afford", fuck the illusion of art being apolitical, fuck the standards given from those who are "supposed to" define how fashion should function, how a woman should look like, how a gender is to conform to the corresponding sex. fuck dress-codes, and similar violations of human rights.
"gotta beat gotta beat, gotta beat c'mon, gotta beat that's breaking the mold, and its a heart-stopping rhythm, because there's nothing sold, and it's a now sound...." (The Nation of Ulysses)
"image is everything --- image is nothing
public eyes public opinion" ! (Shotmaker)
"Never mind what's been selling, It's what you're buying" (Fugazi)
