As you can- tell by my inch or so of re-growth :) it's not so much hard as it is expensive, as you have to get it done about every 5 weeks and if your natural hair colour is naturally darker it really shows. Having said that if you can find a good hairdresser thats not too expensive it's worth it. Tell your friend to try it for sure! :)
