Its not as scary as the ignorance displayed by the human species day after day.

I know how you feel. I'd told my dad that I'd wanted to do medicine when I was about 15, and when it came around to doing my final 2 years of high school, I was really worried that I wouldn't make the cut and be a huge disappointment, and sometimes I just didn't bother working as hard as I should have. But when you think about it, it's only a few more years of school, it isn't long at all, so all you need to do is knuckle down for these few years and you'll be set for life. Don't worry about slacking off a little, everyone needs their R&R, nobody can work 24/7, so don't forget to enjoy the time you have off, especially in high school, I can't begin to tell you how much I miss it! Just make sure you're in gear for crunch time though! I've heard American Unis can be pretty intense and pretty expensive too, but it's great that you're aiming for the Ivy League. Aim high, fall high.

Parents do add a bit of pressure, but remember, they only want you to do well so that you can have the best possible life when you move on! It's good pressure, but don't let it get to you, remember, you're doing mainly it for yourself, your future, pleasing your parents is just a little bit on the side, so don't let it overocook you.

Seriously, don't worry about the questions, if it involves helping someone out in some way, I'm more than happy to do so, more so for a potential medic. Remember, it's only a few years you have to slog, and you'll be relatively comfortable for the rest of your life (apart from the long work hours, but they'll be worth it) If I remember anything later, I'll add onto this, but I've got to drive back to uni now :)

Yeah this bitch at my school once told me, I don't know if its good or bad but whatever. Hahaha he was 17 at the time funny how we still kept in contact and he still thinks I'm russian and my name is Olga. He sounded quite older though, who knows must've been a pedophile but I could tell he lost his phone virginity once I was through with him...

It's a good thing. MIA is cool. :D :D :D Fuckkkkk, that is hilarious. LOL OLGA, SO STEREOTYPICAL. Didn't he notice his phone bill wasn't to Russia... but to Virginia?

You remind me so much of MIA. Has anyone ever told you that? + lololol, that is one of my life goals now. How old was this guy?

Zoe Clyde

DUDE, I HAVE NEVER CALLED UP A RANDOM GUY IN NEW YORK, PRETENDED TO BE A RUSSIAN WHORE, THEN PROCEED TO HAVE PHONE SEX(?) WITH HIM. That is insanely fucking amazing and cool and I wish I had the nerve to do that.

Yeah, kinda, though we won't have any responsibility quite yet. We'll be learning from the absolute basics from Speciality Registrars, Consultants and such, which are basically the UK equivalent to Resident and Attending Doctors, as well as normal classroom lectures.

It's great that you're already thinking about it and doing volunteer work already, you can never get enough before, during and even after you've applied/gotten in to school. Don't worry about jitters, everyone has them, when you finally get in, you just get stuck in and everything just flies right by. I take it that you're in high school or something?

The hardest part, in the UK at least, is getting into med school to be honest. Once you're in, it's still hard and they do make sure you work, but they pretty much make sure that you pass every single year. There's definitely a lot of competition, but if you want to do it, and have the drive to do so, you'll be just fine.

I've just finished my second year, so if I decide to intercalate a second degree, it'll be another four years, if not, another three. I'll probably take another year out after that though before I take up practice and I'm already considering taking the USMLE so I can practice in the US. It's a long time away though, so I'm going to wait and see how that cookie crumbles.

That was pretty long, apologies for the essay concept. I tend to waffle more the more tired I get. But yeah, anything you want to ask, med related or otherwise, feel free to do so and I'll do my best to help out.

Hey!

It hasn't been too bad so far since it's been mainly classes, with the odd patient. But I'm starting clinics this year, so I'll be seeing patients in a hospital on a regular basis, just like an intern. Can't wait though, it should be great, though I've heard that start putting some students on night shifts towards the end of the years, so I'll see how all that goes! It can be a bit long sometimes, but I do really enjoy helping people.
