just b/c it's expensive doesn't mean it's good. a lot of people on flickr take great photos w/ cameras around $500 which is still expensive but i think you can take great photos w/o spending $1,000.

well i've heard canon is better, of course, but i guess nikon will do really well too.
i have it as my first dslr, and it's quite good for learning and stuff..

Haha, the only thing among these I consider as a real benefit is the 11 point AF, at least so far.. I haven't made many videos nor printed large photos and the live screen is not so important either. especially the fact that it can be moved around. i haven't yet found it useful.
buuut.. yeah. maybe i'm just such a beginner in photography and don't know other cameras, but in my oppinion, d5000 is a quite average camera. happy to have it though :D.

I tested the d5000 against the canon 450D and found the canon to have more viberant shots and quicker focus.

i got the d5000 and honestly its well worth it but theres loads of stuff to it so if you re just starting than you should consider buying another camera if not than yeah go for it ! :)

i have the d5000! its AMAZING. i love it. kind of like a poor man's d90..but not in a bad way, its just the d90 is too advanced for me right now - i like that the d5000 is smaller and more upper entry level, whatever that is.
GET IT. i got it pretty cheap in hong kong (and no. its not fake) - you should be able to find some pretty good prices. mine was about 500 quid, including a lens. but yeah..i totally recommend the d5000. i've used the d60 and while its a nice camera, i much prefer the d5000. besides, i looked around for a d60 and its pretty hard to get them now. depending on where you go, the d5000 retails for 500-620 pounds.

I'm kinda in the exact same situation as you. haha. I'm just saving up money and buying it myself though. (I think I'll appreciate it more that way.) I've almost decided on the D5000. I found a blog that compared the D60, D3000, and D5000. They're mostly the same but the D5000 is better with some things.

Also.. I THINK I've seen the D5000 for about $750-$850. I believe it was at Best Buy.

it looks good but it's over 1000 dollars. so if it's in your price range, i'd go for it.
i'm actually looking at getting myself the D3000
(a merry christmas to me. ahahah)
