Have you heard of the principles and elements of design? Google it, if you haven't. Fashion is an art and you need to treat it as such to truly get respect.

For example, you have a black shirt with a red design, black pants, and black shoes with red on them. The red on the shirt connects with the red on the shoes to create unity. There is balance because all aspects of the outfit have black in common. There is contrast with the red on black, the color on black and white, which allows the design to pop. Learning to explain yourself in terms like those, to train yourself as a designer, is going to make you seem much more competent.

Think like an artist. You will seem much more capable, if you do.
