"I consider fashion as a medicine: you can feel better in your skin if you like what you are in a mirror."
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Matthias (I know it’s difficult to pronounce for English speakers!) and I am 22 years old. I grew up in the deep countryside before going to study political sciences in Paris. Now I try to travel as much as I can in order to discover all the beauty of our world before it disappears.
What are your passions?
Everything that makes me dream. I am used to practicing yoga, cooking vegan meals, drawing and playing. Although my main passion is traveling because it is the only way to feel free and happy when you live in a big city where people are always stressed.
How did you first become interested in fashion and why is it important?
Fashion is not really an interest for me, I prefer talking about style as I am not always focused on new products and trends. I used to combine some clothes I got from my big brother with clothes made by my mother and also newbies. Then I fell in love with French couture when I was a teenager and that makes me sensitive to materials and shapes. Since this period I learned to mix all kinds of products to create my own elegancy. I consider fashion as a medicine: you can feel better in your skin if you like what you are in a mirror. Actually fashion or style is a tool to express who you are when you not tell it with words.
How do you describe the fashion scene in Paris compared to other major cities or fashion capitals?
Paris is known as one of the best fashion places in the world but I disagree. Compared to London or Berlin, everyone looks the same in Paris, like clones. I think the reason is simple: when you are a bit different many people stare at you until and you feel uncomfortable, so people prefer adapting their taste to the common taste. I dream about a Paris with more eccentricity.
What do you love about living in Paris?
Ahah such a good question! In fact I would love to move from Paris to abroad. By the way, I enjoy living in Paris because you can meet people who come from everywhere and drink tasty white wines in lovely bars or on the Seine banks.
Tell us your top 3 places to visit in the France:
Paris for all its monuments and exhibitions, Brittany for its wild coasts and Normandy for the green and natural landscapes.
Describe your personal style and its influences or inspirations.
To be sincere, I don’t have any inspiration. I buy things when I have a crush on them and the way I wear them depends on my mood. That is the reason why I don’t know if I have a style or not, but if I had to describe my style I would say it is an elegant combination of vintage, affordable and luxury stuff.
What are your favorite designers and places to shop?
My favorite designers are Lanvin, Jil Sander and Dries Van Noten, but I usually go to vintage and second-hand shops to find unique pieces. Otherwise I order on internet to avoid crowds. Among my favorite e-shops are Asos and Luisaviaroma.
The first thing you look at in another person's outfit is:
If this person is wearing a green stuff or not. I look at the little details because everyone has his own way of wearing them.
What do you skimp on?
Hats. I have some that I like to wear but most of the time I dislike things which hide hair.
What do you splurge on?
Boots. I have already many boots but I cannot resist when I am looking at a new pair because there are so many kinds.
A fashion rule you always break:
Jewelries for men. I am crazy about necklaces, rings and bracelets.
A fashion rule you never break:
Wearing good-sized clothes. I prefer when they are a bit oversized.
What do you think is the most recent notable trend to appear/reappear, and what are your thoughts on it?
Clothes with tartans. I would glad if people could focus on these stuffs instead of buying running sneakers!
What is the most underrated item in menswear and womenswear?
To my mind socks are so underrated whereas they could be very nice to add a little detail to an outfit. That’s why I often wear mine ostensibly.
Your favorite color of the moment is:
Forever and ever green.
What is your next "must have" purchase?
The Nightingale bag by Givenchy or boots with laces.
What is the ultimate showpiece in your closet?
I am hesitating between boots and black skinny jeans…boots!
Are there any fashion icons or famous people whose style you admire?
Not specifically. I prefer looking at people in the streets, they are usually better at styling.
What's on your iPod, bookstand & DVD player at the moment?
Archive feeds my iPod for a long time ago! As far as movies are concerned, I recently watch In the Mood for Love and Drive.
What can't you live without?
Nature and Love.
Next place you want to travel to:
Asia. There you can find many countries with wild nature such as deserts, jungles and simple people.
What is your personal favorite outfit on LOOKBOOK by you, and by another member?
In the year 2018, you will be:
Anyone knows the answer but I only I will be traveling across South America, to reach Ushuaia :-)
What would you say to someone seeking general fashion advice?
Don’t listen to advice and feel.
Our last interviewee Audrey K. wants to know: If you could only rock one accessory for the next year what would it be and why?
Hey Audrey! No more than one so maybe my driving gloves!
What should we ask the next interviewee?
If you get a time-machine, when and where do you wanna move?
