"I like to watch a lot of films also set in different time periods, especially the 16-1800s. Something about the modesty and detail attracts me. "
Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you live.
Hello, I'm Elle-May, I am 20 years old and live in a beachside town called Coolum on the Sunshine Coast of Australia.
I studied graphic design and then went on to do photography for a little while. Now I work as a full time photographer I guess.
My main job is shooting for an online store, I also am photographing quite a few weddings now and any spare time I get I am photographing clothing on myself, as you can see ^_^
What are your passions?
Styling and creating emotive and inspiring imagery. I enjoy that more then photography itself. Other then that I am passionate about life in general!
How did you first become interested in fashion and why is it important?
If I think back I remember being young and seeing other little girls wearing puff sleeve dresses and just craving to wear one of my own. In primary school I'd be creating paper dolls and wardrobes for them, cutting out their drawn up closets and blue-tacking them on haha. I guess my own style has always been of interest and for me its fun, its time out and it allows me to be creative. But this year I've only really started to become more aware of fashion and keeping up to date with the rest of the world. I think I've always been slightly in the loop, but for me it's important to allow that space so I can still mix in influences from nature/ other eras/ other art forms with the freedom of my own mind, you know?
How do you describe the fashion scene in Coolum compared to other major cities or fashion capitals?
Where I live it's quite hot most of the year so people tend to wear as little as possible. Most girls will wear just a light-weight dress with slip on shoes. Guys will wear surf brands, board-shorts and t-shirts. But there is also a really cool echo side to it, where people will create really unique items of clothing with recycled fabrics! I think overall the Sunshine Coast has a mix of people who are on trend, echo / experimental and surf culture. Compared to Sydney and Melbourne I guess majority of the people here don't really care for fashion, practicality comes first.
What do you love about living in the Sunshine State?
Wide open spaces, lots of beautiful nature. I like that I live an hour away from the capital city of QLD, but also close to the hinterland and of course right on the beach. I love how relaxed it is here. People are really friendly.
Tell us your top 3 places to visit in the Australia:
Noosa, Melbourne and Sydney.
Describe your personal style and its influences or inspirations.
I definitely draw inspiration from a few different eras. I like to watch a lot of films also set in different time periods, especially the 16-1800s. Something about the modesty and detail attracts me. I'd say my style is neutral, free flowing but still experimental. I love garments that just hang off my body. I also love things that catch the wind nicely! Fabrics like linens and rough, textured leather make my knees weak. Haha.
What are your favorite designers and places to shop?
I've never had set favourites. At the moment Isabel Marant, Acne, if I were a guy I would dress in Song for the Mute. I shop mainly online all over the place. I really like Wconcept and Free People - I like how they create mini films with their collections!
The first thing you look at in another person's outfit is:
What do you skimp on?
What do you splurge on?
Sunglasses, shoes and dresses.
A fashion rule you always break:
I wear crocs aha, ONLY around the backyard, I will probably regret saying this.
A fashion rule you never break:
I think I would never wear socks with crocs. But then again, I probably would.
What do you think is the most recent notable trend to appear/reappear, and what are your thoughts on it?
There are a lot of all white ensembles I've been noticing, I really like it ~ angelic ^_^
What is the most underrated item in menswear and womenswear?
A good quality thick comfortable knit. I just love wool, and it's so warm everyone needs to keep warm.
Your favorite color of the moment is:
Green is always my favourite. To wear, always black, but recently I have been drawn to a bold electric blue?
What is your next "must have" purchase?
I really would love a beautiful simple linen midi dress in fresh white...and maybe some nice Lemlem flats ^_^ ...and a nice big leather basket for le bike - okay that's pushing it.
What is the ultimate showpiece in your closet?
Hmm, my closet isn't that extravagant, I think maybe this beautiful lace white drop waist LILYA dress which I absolutely adore but hardly ever wear because it's so delicate.
Are there any fashion icons or famous people whose style you admire?
What's on your iPod / bookshelf / movie list at the moment?
I recently saw a mini-series called 'Top of the Lake' filmed in NZ which was so beautiful, also I like 'The Village' TV series, and any romantic drama set in the 17-1800s you can think of I've probably watched at least twice haha.
But I am on the look out for more good films/series to see so any suggestions I would love to know??!
Music ~ Phosphorescent, DIIV, Bombay Bicycle Club, Wild Nothing, Balmorhea, Rhye, The National, Breakbot, lots of musical soundtracks ahaha the list goes on.
What can't you live without?
God, my imagination.
Next place you want to travel to:
Germany! I want to meet my relatives and my Lookbook friend Georg. ^_^
What is your personal favorite outfit on Lookbook by you, and by another member?
In the year 2019, you will be:
The proud owner of the most exquisite chocolatier, I'll be photographing beautiful weddings around the globe and maybe even have my own shoe line (made from natural textures).
What would you say to someone seeking general fashion advice?
I'd say get to know what flatters your body type then don't doubt your instincts, if you like something, roll with it. Experiment, highlight your assets, have fun. ;)
Oh this is good! I would create a fine chocolatier in a large Manner/castle with beautiful gardens but on the edge of a cliff by the ocean.
I'd live upstairs. This would also be a wedding venue where I could remain a wedding photographer and hire the place out/always be styling the rooms and gardens differently for the celebrations.
I'd also still be style blogging!
What should we ask the next interviewee?
If you could create a signature perfume, what would the ingredients consist of and what would you call it and why?
