I’ve already seen Starry Night before our class; and I am always euphoria; when viewing it. The texture used by Vincent Van Gogh is swirly enough to relax me in amusement. This use of swirls as the main texture of the painting multiplied the dynamism of the multiple subjects. Starry Night may not be as bright as Van Gogh’s other paintings; but it certainly is one of his most vibrantly colored. Only small amounts of dark greens and blues balanced the bright yellows and blues. Perhaps I find it nice; because of its dreamy appearance of an ironic vision: the clarity of everything under a night sky. I wonder how Van Gogh made harmony of these opposites.
Most art that I like have an element of wonder. Other works of Vincent; that I like; are Courtesan, Still Life: Vase with Twelve Sunflowers, Still Life With Absinthe, The Sower, and At Eternity’s Gate.
Van Gogh’s life is as striking as his paintings. The other elements in his life aside his artistry will make a good novel in its own. Before deciding to be an artist at the most, he had a calling to be a pastor of the gospel. In failure, he finds out; that his medium to preach is not that of a pastor. He eventually wishes to still preach not in words but in graphics. His physical and emotional healths are just as fleeting as his subject matters. It is not most of the time bright for his love affairs. Dynamic are his relationships with family and friends. He still chooses death in the darkest way possible by taking it himself in contrast to the vibrancy and life of his paintings. Just like a post-impressionist painter’s brushstroke, Vincent has the colorful yet swift and variously subjected life.
The breadth of his subject matter and vibrance of his colors maybe the reason why most of the most expensive paintings are of him. In common relation of subject matter and clear composition, it can be said that Van Gogh paintings are more striking and more interesting to people. These maybe two simple things; but it takes a lot of skill to show the essence of these in a confusing world and to harmonize them together.
