When I was little, every Christmas, my mom would read me the story of Eloise, the girl who lived in a room on the tippy-top floor of The Plaza Hotel in New York with her nanny, her puppy and her pet turtle. Eloise was special because we only read her story once a year - Winnie-the-Pooh, on the other hand, was an everyday read - and I will be the first to admit that her life at the Plaza enchanted me; I would have given my (second) favourite teddy bear to trade places with her. It's been years since I've read about Eloise but when we started planning our trip to New York, she was one of the first things that came to mind. A stay at the Plaza was sadly not in our budget, but I did get to do the next best thing; after a trip to Laduree and and long, meandering walk through Central Park (including a brief stop at the zoo), we celebrated my birthday with afternoon tea at The Palm Court in the Plaza. For a few hours, I was Eloise... Only about twenty-five years older, so I got to enjoy a glass of rose with my fancy sandwiches and scones! It really was an experience that felt like I was living, for however brief a time, in a wonderful storybook. And all storybook moments call for tulle skirts, if you ask me.
