We’ve all had that dream of stepping into someone else’s shoes, and finding out how to live the life of (or at least, dress up like) “that guy”- a movie character, a cartoon character, or just a random generic character. For this reason, Halloween is, undoubtedly, on my top 3 holidays. It’s the only time of the year when I could, in a way, pretend to be someone I am not or something I’ll never be.
This year, I decided to dress up as a pirate not because I’ve been influenced by the mainstream media but because I’ve always wondered what it’s like to live in the high seas, unbound by any state law, nor by society’s notion of what should and shouldn’t be. I admit I do not know a lot about pirates but they always strike me as the freest of the free folks, a happy go-lucky, rum-drinking brothers at arms. They say all men are free but it is also no secret that the society shapes the what is and what is not, the what can and what cannot, and the what should and shouldn’t be to fit in the general consensus. So, the question is, are we truly free? And if I were, say, a pirate, would I have the same thoughts? Believe the same beliefs? I guess I’ll never know. So, as solace, let me just dress like a pirate for a day(night).
