I want, desperately, to shop local - always. (My desire for instant gratification gets in the way of this often, but I'm proud to be wearing almost all Canadian pieces in these photos.) My favourite items in my wardrobe are the ones made in countries I have spent time in; France, Italy, Spain. The most special items in my wardrobe are the rare ones I've been able to find made in my own country - Yoga Jeans, vintage coats my mom wore in the 70s and now, boots from La Canadienne. Garments bearing a "made in Canada" label are rare and elusive; when you find them, they are absolutely worth snatching up, in multiples if possible. Canadian craftsmanship is highly underrated, because culturally we Canadians are sometimes unwilling to recognise greatness among us until it has proven itself far from home. I'm so glad that there are brands and manufacturers who carry on their work in Canada despite not always getting the attention that they deserve. La Canadienne's footwear is made in Montreal, in one of the last shoe factories left in the country. After wearing my Radha boots for the first time, I found myself lamenting the lack of shoemakers left in my country - because these boots are just so good, so comfortable from the very first wear and so easy to match with any outfit, I don't want to have to wear shoes made overseas ever again. And I can't imagine why anyone would. La Canadienne is my favourite Canadian brand of the moment, but there are so many great ones out there, many of which I'm sure I've never heard of, so I want to know - what Canadian brands are you crushing on right now?
