I've been flying all my life, and the experience has never seemed particularly glamourous to me. When the show Pan Am debuted, I was unmoved by the idea of stories about stewardesses, and watched it nearly a year after it went off the air. When I did finally tune in, it was Pan Am that finally made me fall in love with the idea of what air travel could be. But this isn't 1961, and the fact is that air travel is far from what it could be - the jet age has passed and on a transatlantic flight, I know I will spend most of my time crowded in a seat that is barely large enough for someone my size, likely between two people who are even less comfortable than I am. Every year, I take this reality into consideration a little bit more when planning my travelling to Europe outfit. Last year, my carry-on bag was nothing more substantial than a Celine cabas. But after an experience in lost luggage en route to New York, I knew it was time to make a serious change. Not only did I feel so much more at ease know that my Chanel handbag and Christian Louboutin heels were safely stowed in the overhead compartment in my Herschel Supply Co. carry-on suitcase, I had a lot more leg room under my seat when I didn't spend the whole flight worrying if my shoes were brushing up against my pristine Celine cabas. Speaking of shoes, I've finally given up on wearing heels in flight. Admittedly, the experience was a little strange, but travelling from warm and rainy Vancouver to Berlin, where I knew the weather would still be wintery, a warm pair of shoes just made sense. (And although I admit that I walked all over Berlin in a variety of impractical shoes, when I came back to our hotel room with frozen toes, I was so glad to be able to slip into my warm Ugg boots - they're seriously just like a pair of slippers!) While I admit that I still wish air travel was as glamourous as it seems it must have been in the 1960s, we've come so far in so many other respects since then, as my time in Berlin made me very acutely aware, that I'm glad to suffer with less than ideal flight conditions. Transatlantic travel is still an amazing experience that I think everyone should have at least once, and you can still look totally put together in clothes that will keep you comfortable for the duration of your flight - I've shared my tips before, but the essence of those is distilled in this outfit; good jeans, warm layers and, of course, cute luggage!
