When we travel overseas, whether by luck or habit, we almost always arrive at our destination after dark. I don't think I was ever afraid of the dark, even when I was little, but I admit that it's a strange experience to get your first glimpse of a city by the light of street lamps. It has been almost thirty years since the reunification of Berlin but the united city is still developing its new identity and a lot of it remains under construction, including the neighbourhood where our hotel was located. The taxi driver didn't know where to find it anymore than we did, and a fractured conversation in broken German and English ensued, as well as a lot of Google Maps searching, before we go on our way and, after sixteen hours of travel plus one mislaid suitcase, it was almost more than I could bear to leave the hotel again to explore our lamplit neighbourhood of Moabit. But everything looks so different in the morning; what is new seems somehow familiar, or at least less daunting in daylight. We woke up on a cold, clear Sunday in Berlin, much colder than anything we usually experience on our springtime trips to Paris, which made me all the more glad that my suitcase had made it all the way to Berlin - because this cozy Lover & Friends sweater was in it. (My make-up, however, wasn't. The bag took up too much valuable shoe real estate, so I convinced Ian to pack it in his much less full suitcase, which explains my bare face in these photos... when we took them, all of my cosmetics were still in London. But it's good to get out of your comfort zone sometimes; if I can appear in outfit photos without make-up on, I can do anything.) We took a morning walk in our very quiet neighbourhood, along the banks of the Spree River. It was chilly, but you know me, I'm always willing to suffer for a good outfit, at least for a little while. I absolutely love the off the shoulder style of this sweater, but admit that because of the temperature I didn't stick with it for long. Once we got back inside, I rolled the extra fabric up into a warm cowl neck before we headed out again, this time to meet friends for a very exciting Sunday field trip to a the Markthalle Neun Breakfast Market, a definite must-visit in Berlin if you time your visit right, which I'll tell you all about next week. But in the meantime, my sweater and I are back in Vancouver, hunkered down in the office, counting the minutes until four pm. It's been a long first week back at work but there is some lovely French champagne chilling in the fridge and I think I've earned it - happy Friday!
