I know that so many of my posts start with the words, when I was…, but I can’t help it – to me, everything is a story. But today I’m going to phrase my opening a bit differently – when I discovered the brand Circus Royalty on instagram, thanks to a tip from a very stylish friend, the first thing that came to my mind after, Wow, this collection is amazing! was the book Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks with a Circus by James Otis, a children’s book later made into a Disney movie that couldn’t have less in common with elegant women’s blouses made in LA. When I think about books that I’ve read – and the list is very, very long; when I was between the ages of ten and fourteen, I read something like forty books every month (although a lot of them were part of The Baby-Sitters Club series, admittedly.) – Toby Tyler stands out as without a doubt the silliest. I felt no real sympathy for orphaned Toby; in fact, I remember him being whiny. But I remember him, and that’s the interesting part – I couldn’t tell you the titles of most of the books I read as child, never mind give any opinions about their plot or characters. Despite my feelings about Toby Tyler, he was different and memorable, which is where he comes full circle to have something in common with Circus Royalty, because the tops that the brand makes, like the one I’m wearing in this post, are just so different – in the most wonderful way. When you don’t wear colour, you really have the stretch the limitations of fabric and texture and cut to make your outfits have more visual appeal, especially when you’re sharing them with the world on an almost daily basis. It’s a challenge that I love but that, admittedly, occasionally makes me wonder if I’m not just wearing the same thing over and over in different shades. I mean, really – with black, white and grey, how much variety can there possibly be, I ask myself. And then a brand like Circus Royalty comes along, proving that the answer is: a lot. I’m not about to join the real circus, of course, but I am tempted to add more of Circus Royalty’s creations to my closet.
