I love the idea of a ponytail. But I’ve never been able to master the ponytail. I realise how silly that sounds since technically, all a ponytail requires is the hair on your head and an elastic. But not all ponytails are created equal and mine, historically, have mostly been lopsided, not to mention a bit boring. Until recently, I always favoured a low bun, and would never have dreamed of wearing a ponytail for anything more exciting than a grocery store run. But this style changed everything.
It’s hard enough to figure out what to wear to a wedding without considering your hairstyle. For me, hair is usually the last thing I think about no matter what the occasion – my plans start with my outfit, followed by shoes and accessories, make-up and, finally hair. When attending weddings, I often find myself overdressed. I just have so many lovely dresses and a wedding is a perfect occasion to get them out. When my brother- and sister-in-law got married this summer, I made a last minute split decision and completely changed my outfit just before leaving home. Truth be told: I would have been overdressed in my original outfit. And it was mostly because of how I styled my hair. When you get dressed up, the secret is to dress your hair down – and a ponytail is a perfect way to do it.
This is no ordinary ponytail, mind you. It certainly doesn’t look like any ponytail I’ve ever done myself. But the more I think about it, the more I realise that I’ve been underestimating ponytails all along. Just because all the really require is a hair elastic and two seconds of effort doesn’t mean they can’t be so much more than that. Starting with beach waves and wrapping a strand of hair around the elastic took this ponytail to a whole new level – without making the style look too fancy, which means it’s perfect to pair with your favourite dress, no matter how fancy, for a night out at a wedding.
Where do you stand on ponytails? Personally, I think I’m going to be wearing them a lot more often!
