It’s amazing the way our tastes can evolve so slowly and subtly that we almost don’t notice it happening. I had the idea for this outfit over a year ago, but didn’t actually put it on until a few weeks ago. My days in short skirts, mostly, are long over. I never felt fully comfortable in them and I know now that life is too short to wear clothes you don’t feel fabulous in. But I love this denim skirt – it’s another piece from my favourite denim brand, Grlfrnd, and I can’t resist pulling it out once in a while. I wear heels a lot less these days – somehow, constantly sporting four-inch stilettos feels like trying too hard to me now. (Which I never, in my wildest dreams, thought I would say.) That said, these Sam Edelman pumps are super comfortable and easy to wear.
I love all the pieces of this outfit, basically. But as soon as I left the house in it, I felt overdressed.
When I say overdressed, I don’t mean that I felt fancier than I meant to for the occasion, although I definitely did – we went to Ikea after we took these shots. I mean that I felt like I’d added one too many eye-catching elements to my outfit. A short skirt can work, but these days, I want to pair it with flats. And sky-high heels can work, too – but with jeans, or maybe a long skirt. There was a time when I might genuinely have described my style as maximalist – I wanted to try everything, and I tried lots of things all at the same time. (Once, I paired an orange blouse with a turquoise skirt and gold glitter pumps. For work. Yep. That happened. Talk about being overdressed…)
These days, I feel like my attitude is completely the opposite. Maybe I’ve read too many books about modern French style, but I prefer to be a little underdressed. I would rather look like my outfit came together effortlessly (even if, in reality, I chose it from a list of outfit ideas that I write down as they come to me.) High heels and a short skirt doesn’t really fit into my idea of effortless this year, although it still did last year. But the change happened so quietly that I didn’t even notice until I was dressed and out the door.
I’m curious – how has your style evolved over the years?
