Short and Sweet

Cee F. - - Short and Sweet

I double-checked the archives to make sure, and it’s confirmed: somehow, in eight years, I have never used the title Short and Sweet. Until now. Considering that I am five foot two, my stature – or lack thereof – has been one of my most notable features since I officially stopped growing and found myself as the smallest person in my class by ninth grade. But while the word short does describe me, the word sweet doesn’t – I am many things, but soft, demure and amenable are not among them. So that probably explains the title thing.

The truth is, this post has nothing at all to do with my height – or lack thereof. I am preparing posts ahead of time for the week I am away in Halifax, because I intend to disconnect from everything but my phone while I’m away. (What can I say? I love my iPhone.) Four posts later, I’ve been struck by a sudden bout of writer’s block and… here we are, talking about titles and why I may or may not have chosen to use them over the years.

There was a time when I treated this space like a diary, sharing whatever came to mind, sometimes in long, rambling articles and sometimes in short, flippant paragraphs. I launched this space not long after giving up journalling after a lifetime, so it made sense. These days, I prefer to have some idea of what I want to say before I sit down to write… even if what I want to write about is nothing more significant than why I am excited about a new pair of shoes. But, despite my best-laid plans, I am out of ideas.

So, for once, I will keep this short and sweet. By the time you read this, I will be just back from Halifax… and six weeks from our next adventure, an autumn holiday in Italy. I’ve been waiting more than a year to get back to Europe. (We left Paris on May twenty-ninth 2017. I started planning to go back on May thirtieth of the same year. My love of the continent is real.) It’s taken longer than I hoped to get there. But I know that discovering Florence and Verona for the first time will make that wait feel worthwhile. And the wine and cheese. That will make the wait feel worthwhile, too.
