Our Philosophy professor asked us and gave us an assignment - "WHAT MAKES US TRULY HUMAN? Based on my opinion I answered this:

What makes us Human? Excrescency that`s what I thought. That`s what give us an identity or a signature look. That`s what make us and that`s what make us human. They say "Homer sometimes nods" which is an erudite way of saying "Nobody`s Perfect" and I agree with that and I think the whole world agrees with it. We have our own flaws and imperfections, it might be physically, mentally or spiritually. Some of us hate it, some of us is dying to fix it, a few of us is taking advantage of it, half of us does not care at all, and not all of us are proud and flaunting it. Some people might call us "cracked in the ring" or of little value or use, some might label us "diamond in the rough" one whose unrefined external appearance or ungraceful behavior belies a good or gentle character and untapped potential. One might entitle us "feet of clay" an unforeseen blemish in the character of a person. A lot of individuals might call us a "mote in the eye" or a fault or imperfection observed in a person by one who is guilty of something equally or more objectionable. Many might tell us that we`re "a rift in the lute" a flaw or imperfection, particularly one that endangers the integrity of the whole; the one rotten apple that spoils the whole barrel or some might classify us "rough edges" our characteristics or manners indicating a lack of polish, refinement, or completion. Mistakes and flaws that`s what make us imperfect and imperfections make us human.

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK? FOR YOU, WHAT MAKES US TRULY HUMAN? Every opinion will be valued :)

For me truly human is the human who understand other people feelings and don't judge other people because of single behaviours. The real human also need something more than "food and drink". The other feed for him/her is art which is needed to feed the soul. Obviously You write it in the better way (I even don't understand a lot of words because I don't speak English so good:P)

Hmm... I think that our mistakes are what make us human. Our choices and decisions are what define us as a species.
And opposable thumbs of course. :)

I think it's the ability of freewill. Bring able to choose what we want and don't want to do. Who we don't and become friends with.

There's a lot of things that makes us human, pain, death, grief, etc. but my fav would be summed up in a proverb:

"a diamond cant be a jewel without friction, nor a man without trials"

I certainly hope not. Because the definition we have to take away from what society has given us is... worrisome.

I would say that a thing that makes us truly human is that we aren´t perfect and that we make mistakes, but I don´t think that that is the most imortant, but the fact that we can regret things and make changes. Make better choices, growing and improve our actions! I realise that it may sound a bit messy, but something like that.

I believe that 'All flesh is not the same: Men have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another.'

... and that is why we are human beings.

We're born, we eat, we defaecate, we fornicate, sometimes kill & then we die.

We are an outgrowth of nature & created an unnatural habitat that was more to our apparent liking. The greatest tragedy of the human condition was when humanity became convinced it is not part of nature, that we are elevated above it, distinct from it, human & civilized despite the savagery which civilization generates.

"we're a virus with shoes, okay?" to quote Bill Hicks.

the ancient greek philosopher though that what really makes humans different from any other thing or living being was the "logos" which can be translated into reason. this is the ability to make sense of things and apply logic (word actually derived from the greek logos) in thinking. and what's very interesting about some ancient philosophers (who had given almost religious answers to philosophical questions) is that they though that human reason was part of a bigger soul of the cosmos, thus creating a strong and indestructible connection between humans and nature.
Also, what makes us humans is the ability and possibility to control our impulses and instincts while all the other animals do not really have a choice. and so we get to the last thing which makes us humans that is freedom. and when I say freedom I mean the ability to decide whether to do something or not after having analysed the options, pros and cons.
it is very difficult to answer the question your professor gave you, we've been trying to figure out who we are since 3000 years or even more!
